Janie pulled up in front of my house, and I took a long, deep, fortifying breath. I was feeling good now, back to myself now that I was eating right and my morning sickness was a thing of the past. I was ready to clean out my house.
"I can stay or you can come to Lucio's house," Janie said to me.
I knew she didn't want to leave me alone to face whatever I was walking into, but I needed to do this by and for myself. I was tired of not having had the strength to fight, and now that I was back in fighting form, I was ready to handle my business. Get some answers, find out what had followed Nico's yeah to Desti's disgusting proposition that they fuck and find out just how far things had gone between them while I'd been away. There was still the matter of the birth control to deal with, but I wanted to have that discussion outside the house so Vic couldn't hear that.
"Nope. I love you for that, but I'm done running and I'm done hiding." It was amazing how much feeling better did for your spirit.
"Well, I'm leaving three of them with you," Janie told me, indicating the six bodyguards she had on her at all times who were in the two cars behind us.
She texted them, and one car pulled around us and headed to the back of our house. I knew they'd sweep the house and then position themselves outside where they couldn't be seen but where they could watch. I let Janie have that win because if I didn't, I suspected she'd end up staying, and I'd already taken her away from Lucio for too long. They needed to reconnect after being apart for eight weeks.
Since these bodyguards were technically Nico's men, I had no doubt whatsoever that Nico had been informed that I was home. When I saw Nico's car speeding down the road leading up to our house, I knew I'd been right.
Giving Janie a hug, assuring her I'd be fine, she got in her car and wheeled around, her three remaining guards following behind. We had a driveway big enough for two cars to drive side-by-side, but Janie was going right down the middle.
Oh, shit.
Nico was now coming up the drive and Janie was heading out.
No.
She was aiming straight toward Nico, accelerating if I wanted to be honest, ready to play a dangerous game of chicken. He knew her car, so he knew she was behind the wheel. Nico didn't even engage -- he just pulled onto the grass at the side of the driveway and let her car and her bodyguards' car pass. Nico pulled up, parked beside Desti's car and ran up to the house. I'd timed it so I was walking into the house just ahead of him. No private reunion, Nico. We're going to do this in front of Desti.
I walked in and I heard Desti in the kitchen. "Hey, Nico!" she called. "Dinner's almost ready."
Nico was right behind me. "Costanza," he said, reaching for me. "God, I've missed you. Are you OK, sweetheart?"
I stepped out of his reach while Desti came flying out of the kitchen the minute she heard Nico say my name.
"You're back," she said flatly, and I realized all pretense of us being loving sisters was done. Clearly she'd dressed for propositioning Nico, part two given the low cut dress she was wearing -- off the shoulder with wide sleeves and a short, swingy skirt. She wasn't playing now, that much was obvious.
But neither was I.
"Yes, I'm back, and I don't want any whores in my house, so you can march your ass home and try to find some other man to offer sex to. Preferably not a married one."
"Nico didn't seem to mind," she taunted me.
"The hell I didn't," Nico snapped. "You asked if I wanted you to blow my mind and what did I say to that?"
