It is early morning. It has been 3 days since Emmeline, Richard and Paddy were found and now they are only a few hours away from arriving to San Francisco, their new home with their Uncle Arthur. Emmeline is awake and watching the sun rise over the horizon at the front of the ship. She was very deep in thought and did not sleep well the night before. Back in the ship's cabin, Richard awoke to Emmeline not being in the same bed as him. Paddy was fast asleep still and so Richard went to find Emmeline. He walked out of the cabin and saw her watching the sunrise. Her hair flowed in the early morning breeze. He thought that she looked beautiful and then slowly walked over to her. "Em? What are you doing up so early?" Richard asked with a yawn. "Oh nothing, just thinking. I didn't sleep well at all last night." She replied sadly. "Em, you're sad. What is really going on?" Richard asked.
"Well...I'm scared Richard." "Of what? We are off the island and there is nothing to be afraid of now. We're safe." He said, wrapping his arms around her. "Its not that..." Emmeline started, getting up and walking towards one of the ship's railings. She put her arms on the railing and stared at the morning sky. Richard followed her over there. "Tell me. I want to know what is bothering you." He said. "Its not that I'm scared of something, its that I'm scared about our new lives. We have been away from people for so long and what if they don't like us, Richard?" "Impossible. What's not to like?" Richard started, "I know for a fact that I love you very much and if someone else doesn't, then they are missing out on the best Em in the whole world." He said, turning Emmeline around, smiling at her. She smiled back and kissed him. "Thank you Richard." They held each other in their arms and watched the sun continue to come up.
It is about an hour later and Emmeline is feeding Paddy. "Wow, he is really hungry today." Richard said. "I know." Emmeline said with a laugh. Just then there was a knock at their ship cabin door. "May I come in?" Arthur asked. "Just a minute Father, Em is feeding Paddy." He said. "All right well when you are both done, then please come visit my room. I need to talk with both of you." He said. "We will be right out!" Emmeline responded. Paddy soon then finished drinking his milk and was dozing off. It was time for his afternoon nap. Richard swaddled Paddy in a blanket that was on the bed and laid him comfortably on the middle of the bed with a pillow. Emmeline and Richard quietly left the ship's cabin and then walked over to the second part of the cabin where Arthur was staying. "Oh good! You're here." He exclaimed. "What is it Father?" Richard asked. "I'll show you both," He started, walking towards his closet. Inside was a suit and a dress, for Richard and Emmeline. "If you want to go to San Francisco, I believe you two would want to dress the part." He said with a smile. "Oh its beautiful! Thank you Uncle Arthur, thank you!" She said, twirling around holding the dress. She kissed her Uncle's cheek happily and then immediately went into the bathroom part of the cabin and changed into the dress. "Thank you, Father!" Richard said. And then he stepped into the closet to change into his suit.
Richard walked out of the closet in his new suit in which he felt was very nice. He could see the resemblance between him and his father. "It was mine when I was younger, like you." Arthur said. Richard hugged him tightly. "Thank you Father."
Then, Emmeline stepped out of the bathroom wearing her new dress. "Did I put this on right Uncle Arthur?" She questioned. She was a vision. The dress was a light blue color which complimented her eyes very well. "It's a perfect fit, Emmeline!" Arthur replied. Richard couldn't take his eyes off of Em. She looked stunning. "Em, you're so beautiful." Richard said, continuing to admire her. Arthur smiled, tears in his eyes. Never in a million years he thought Richard and Emmeline would come to love each other, but they did. And their relationship was as strong as ever. "You know, Emmeline...it wasn't a coincidence that this was the dress I picked out for you. This dress...was your mother's. Before she died she wanted you to have access to all of her wardrobe." He said. Emmeline then turned and looked at herself in the mirror. It wasn't until then that she saw her mother's face in her own. She smiled as tears filled her eyes and hugged Arthur. "Thank you Uncle."
Then they heard Paddy crying from the other part of the ship's cabin. The three of them walked over to Paddy and Richard picked him up and held him. He continued to cry and reached for what seemed to be Emmeline. Emmeline held him and only then they realized he was reaching for Arthur. Arthur held Paddy in his arms and he stopped crying. "Hello Paddy! Did you have a good nap?" He said. Paddy stopped crying and smiled. Just then, one of the crew members called out, "Land ho! We are approaching the San Francisco docks!" Arthur gently handed Paddy to Emmeline and then walked upstairs to the deck. Richard and Emmeline looked at each other and then followed their Uncle. They walked up to see a city in front of them. There was a huge crowd waiting by the docks to welcome them. The word got out that Arthur's niece and nephew were found. Emmeline and Richard stood in awe of the city. Even more at the people who were welcoming them. Paddy looked just as surprised as them two. This was it. San Francisco. Or, "San Farisco".
