Alice removed the vent cover and climbed into a hallway. Erica followed, then Matt and Spence helped Rain up. The boys supported Rain between them with one of her arms over each of their shoulders. That's not what caught Erica's attention though.
It was coming back, these once sterile hallways were familiar.
Little Erica ran through the halls, trying to escape the scientists. They insisted that their needles and tubes were to help her but they hurt. Eventually she ran into someone's leg. She looked up to see her dad, he said kind words and picked her up. She hugged him and then felt the prick of a needle in her neck.
The next time she woke up she was surrounded by tubes. Year after year, they poked and prodded her. They cut her arm with a box cutter and watched as the cut closed near instantly. They had her punch bags and run on treadmills.
She could hear her parents talking. She was a failure.
All she could do was heal. She was sent out of the labs and lived in the city above, regularly coming back for tests. Her life revolved around this lab and it always would.
Her parents didn't care, they created more people in their labs.
Many were deformed, barely humanoid, failures. But they were more interesting failures than Erica.
She wasn't stupid, she saw the men tailing her. The cameras in the common areas of her house. When she tried to leave the city they pulled her over and sent her back.
Eventually Erica gave up and signed up to work for them. She trained, she learned, she made herself valuable. She was assigned to a mansion outside the city limits. It was an emergency entrance to the Hive.
The furthest she had ever been from the city."Blue for the virus, green for the antivirus."
Alice's voice drew Erica from her thoughts. She looked over to where Alice was standing in front of a pane of glass, Matt was standing next to her.
"There's a cure. The process can be reversed!" Alice yelled.
She ran to Rain to tell her she was going to be okay and then took off into one of the labs.
"I was beginning to worry." Rain said sarcastically.
Erica just shrugged and followed Alice. The lab hallways were mostly drained but the labs themselves were set into the floor so the sunken part of the lab remained flooded. When Erica descended the stairs from the platform by the door she had to wade through the lab. Spence, Rain and Matt entered behind them. Spence helped Rain sit down and then descended into the lab himself. Matt stayed standing on the door platform while Rain sat there, holding the bars of the handrail.
"It's not here, it's gone!" Alice yelled. "Where did it go?! It's supposed to be here!"
"How do you know all this?" Matt asked.
"Because I was going to steal it." Alice replied. "I was your sister's contact."
"Did you set her up?" He asked.
"I don't know."
Matt grabbed Alice's shoulder insistently.
"Tell me the truth." He said forcefully.
"I don't remember the truth." Alice shrugged Matt's hand off her shoulder.
She turned to Spence. He was standing silently in the centre of the lab and staring at the empty cases. Alice tried to get his attention but it didn't work. After a minute of two or silence he turned away from the lab cases and looked at a gun on a nearby cart.
Alice dived for the gun but Spence got there first and pointed it at her. Erica tried to sneak around him but wading through water isn't all that quiet and she caught Spence's attention. He kept his gun trained on Erica while addressing Alice.
"You can come with me." Spence told her. "There will be so much money waiting for us. We can go anywhere, do anything."
"Is that how you thought all my dreams would come true?" Alice asked blankly.
"Where..." Rain spoke up. Her voice trailed in and out with her laboured breathing.
"Where is... the antivirus?"
Spence smiled bitterly.
"Where you found me, on the train. Can't have been more than 20 feet away from it." He sighed a laugh. "I so nearly got away with it. I didn't know that bitch of a computer had defence systems outside the Hive."
"Because you're an arrogant asshole who probably skimped on the research." Erica deadpanned.
"Shut up!" Spence refocused on her.
"You're the one that wrote that note. Don't follow us." Erica said.
"Because you're a clingy parasite who needs to back off." Spence answered. He turned back to Alice.
"In. Or out." He said.
He was completely oblivious to the undead scientist rising to the surface of the water behind him. Matt jumped the railing of the platform by the door into the water. The splash covered the sound of the infected surfacing. Spence turned the gun on Matt.
"Don't try it, I don't want to shoot you. I might need the bullets." He said smugly.
"I don't know what we had," Alice said, "but it's over now."
The infected scientist had come close enough to Spence to grab him. As Spence struggled Alice, Matt and Erica surged forward to try to take the gun from him. Unfortunately he managed to shoot the scientist and run to the door.
"I miss you already." Spence told Alice.
In response Erica pulled her pistol and shot him in the shoulder.
"You bitch!" Spence yelled.
He ran out the door and shut it behind him. The mechanism on the door triggered and locked it behind him. Matt ran to the door and tried to open it but failed.
"He shot the locking mechanism out!" Matt yelled.
"Your boyfriend's a real asshole." Rain muttered derisively.
"I can't believe that asshole is going to get away with this!" Matt yelled.
"I don't think so." A child's voice rung through the lab.
A tv hanging on the wall turned on.
