"The Spark"
The sun was now fully up as we stepped off the bus and onto the bustling campus. The energy of the city seemed to seep into the school grounds, where students moved briskly between buildings, a living testament to the rhythm of urban life.
I joined my dormmates as we headed towards our respective classes. The campus was vast, with a mix of modern buildings and green spaces that provided a stark contrast to the surrounding cityscape. Despite my focus on academics, I couldn't help but be swept up in the lively chatter of my new friends.
"Did you see the new café they just opened on campus?" Gennie's voice cut through the morning air with her usual enthusiasm. "Apparently, they have the best croissants in town!"
Elexis adjusted her bag and shook her head. "I haven't been there yet. I've been too busy with my schedule. But I'll make time to check it out if it's as good as you say."
Katie, who had been walking alongside us with a calm, almost detached demeanor, looked up with mild interest. "I might swing by if I have time between classes. I'm more of a tea person, though. How about you, Crystie?"
Crystie, her sketchbook clutched under one arm, considered the question thoughtfully. "I might go if I finish my assignment early. I've been working on a series of illustrations that I want to get just right. A café visit sounds like a nice break."
Gay, who had been quietly listening, gave a gentle nod. "I'll probably go if I can. Sometimes a change of scenery helps with focus. Plus, a good croissant could be a nice treat."
As we continued to chat, I noticed a tall figure ahead, moving with an air of confidence that set him apart from the rest. He was a senior, Brad, as I later learned. There was something striking about him-perhaps it was the way he carried himself, with an ease that suggested he was entirely at home on the campus. His presence seemed to cast a brief shadow over the busy scene.
I didn't think much of it at first. My focus remained on the tasks at hand, mainly my classes and assignments. But I couldn't ignore the small, inexplicable spark of interest that flared up when I saw him. It was subtle, almost imperceptible, but enough to make me pause for a moment.
The group was too engrossed in their conversation for me to dwell on it. Cath, in particular, was animatedly discussing a new student club she had heard about.
"You guys have to join the Debate Society! I heard they're looking for new members, and it sounds like it could be a lot of fun," Cath said, her voice brimming with enthusiasm.
Gennie's eyes lit up. "That sounds like something I'd be into. I love a good debate. Plus, it's a great way to meet people."
Elexis, ever the planner, was already considering the logistics. "I'll look into their meeting schedule and see if it fits with my current commitments. If it does, I might give it a try."
Katie raised an eyebrow. "I'm not sure if debating is really my thing. I prefer a more relaxed environment. But if you all join, I might check it out just to see what it's like."
Crystie, still absorbed in her thoughts, nodded absentmindedly. "I might join too, if I can fit it into my schedule. I've always liked the idea of debate, but I haven't had the chance to explore it."
Gay, who had been quietly absorbing the conversation, added her perspective. "It sounds interesting. I think it's good to have diverse activities. It can be a nice break from academic pressures."
As we reached our building, the conversation shifted to our class schedules and upcoming assignments. The buzz of activity around us seemed to blend with our own chatter, creating a lively backdrop for the day ahead.
