I bit my lips, gazing at myself in the mirror for what felt like the hundredth time today. A flutter of excitement bubbled within me and I couldn’t help but smile at my reflection.

Today was special. Well, every day I saw Areum felt like a celebration in my chest. Three whole months had passed since she walked into my life. Nothing had ever prepared me for the beauty these days would hold. God, I loved her so much. Areum was a flower, a pure, delicate bloom that outshined every garden in existence. None of them could ever compare to her.

Every morning, my mind would wake up to thoughts of her and at night, they lingered as I drifted into sleep. She was woven into every hour of my day. I got to see her every day, except Thursdays—the bane of my week. Thursdays meant she had to visit her parents and that one day without her felt like a gap in my very existence.

Areum always brought me a tulip, every day without fail. It was a simple gesture but the single flower lit up my entire day. I kept every one she ever gifted me. My small apartment was slowly transforming into a garden of her tulips. And my walls. Oh, they were a gallery of her portraits and sketches, more of her essence than I could capture in a lifetime.

I think I might be able to open a whole exhibition dedicated to her one day. Maybe I will. For now, I was still wrestling with my current piece. My attempt to capture the rawness of emotion.

Madness, peace, love. No matter how I tried, I couldn’t quite nail the heart of it. I was missing something essential. At least I had managed to capture relief. That had come so naturally.

Relief—Done.

The day I finally understood relief was an unforgettable one

The day I finally understood relief was an unforgettable one. It was during a political protest that had emptied the streets of Busan. Schools, universities, even workplaces were shut down and my little stall was deserted. The day dragged on and a sinking dread that I might go without a single sale.

Evening came and my stomach was twisting with disappointment when, finally, a man approached. He glanced over my art and his eyes softened as he settled on a painting of a girl sitting with red flowers.
