Chapter 1: Transitions
The moving van rumbled up the tree-lined street of the capital's elite neighborhood, passing neighbors who are so engaged in their daily routines. Luca felt a mix of nostalgia from his old life and anticipation for the new experiences awaiting him in the capital. He nervously glanced at the grand mansion that would be soon their new home. The transition from their tiny flat to this sprawling estate felt overwhelming, and he sighed, as he thought about the upcoming changes.
Luca's mom, Lydia, bustled around, organizing the movers and directing them with their belongings. Her excitement about moving was palpable, but Luca struggled to share her enthusiasm. He gave her a light smile, trying to reassure her. As he looked around, everything seemed so foreign, polished, and too perfect, which made him feel uneasy.
As they unloaded the last box, the door squeaked open, revealing Robert, Luca's stepdad. He was tall, Luca noted, towering over him. Robert's presence exuded a manly authority and fatherly aura that effortlessly commanded respect and a touch of intimidation. However, the imposing figure was softened by a warm, welcoming smile. He stepped out onto the front porch, holding a phone in one hand and a set of keys in the other.
"Welcome home!" Robert called out, his voice echoing through the cool autumn air. "I hope you're settling in well."
Luca smiled half-heartedly as his gaze drifted to the luxury cars parked in the driveway and the spacious, perfectly maintained garden. He was just starting to come to terms with the reality of his new surroundings and how different they were from his previous home.
As if on cue, the front door swung open once more, and Jhoanna stepped out. With her effortless grace and radiant smile, she looked every bit the part of a capital socialite. Her presence seemed to command the attention of everyone. Beside her stood a group of seven girls, chatting animatedly and laughing together. Their vibrant energy was a striking contrast to the opulence of the house, adding a lively, refreshing dynamic to the scene.
"Luca, let me introduce you," Robert said, guiding him toward the newcomers. "This is my daughter, Jhoanna. She's just started her final year at the elite BINI Capital Academy. And these are her friends: Maloi, Stacy, Colet, Mikha, Sheena, Gwen, and Aiah."
Luca felt a jolt of nerves as he met each girl's gaze. They all offered friendly smiles, though some seemed a bit reserved. Beneath their warmth, Luca sensed a layer of formality. Jhoanna's eyes, in particular, held a curious glint as she observed him, her smile never quite reaching her eyes.
"Hey, Luca," Johanna said, her voice smooth and inviting. "It's nice to finally meet you. I'm sure you'll get to know everyone pretty well."
Luca managed a polite nod, feeling the weight of the new environment settle heavily on his shoulders. The girls greeted him with varying degrees of enthusiasm, their voices blending into a cheerful hum.
As the day wore on, Luca and his mom continued to unpack boxes, occasionally stealing glances at the bustling social scene outside. Jhoanna and her friends seemed to transition effortlessly between casual conversation and animated laughter, making Luca feel like an outsider looking in.
Later that afternoon, Robert gathered the family for a brief tour of the estate. Luca trailed behind, struggling to keep up with the whirlwind of activity. Jhoanna and her friends disappeared into the house, presumably returning to their own lives, leaving Luca to ponder his place in this new world.
"Let me show you to your room," Robert said, his voice betraying a hint of shyness as he guided Luca up the grand staircase. He felt a bit awkward, unsure of how to interact with Luca since he had only ever had Jhoanna, his only daughter, for years. Trying to navigate this new dynamic, he cleared his throat as he opened the door to Luca's room.
