A few minutes later, Asher's phone dinged with a notification. She glanced down to see that she'd been mentioned in an Instagram story by Sydney. Curiously, she opened it to find a picture of the coffee she had given Sydney earlier. Along with the photo was a caption that read, "So sweet, Ash"Asher's heart skipped a beat at the unexpected nickname. "Ash? Did she just call me Ash?" she thought, feeling a mix of surprise and excitement. Her cheeks flushed, and she felt a warmth spread across her face. She looked up and saw Sydney from across the room, smiling down at her phone, clearly amused by Asher's welcoming gift.
What do I do? Asher thought, her mind racing. Do I walk over and say something? Should I text her back and thank her? Or maybe just like the story and play it cool? Why the fuck would I thank her?
She couldn't decide. Her heart was pounding so loudly she was sure everyone in the room could hear it. Asher's eyes darted back to her phone, her thumb hovering over the "like" button. Be mysterious, keep it simple, she told herself. Don't overthink it.
Finally, she decided to just like the story, her thumb pressing down lightly. She watched as the little heart filled in red, hoping it seemed casual and not too eager. Then she glanced back up at Sydney, who caught her eye and gave her a soft smile. This made Asher just blush even more.
Asher's blush deepened, and she quickly looked away, trying to focus on the script in front of her. But it was useless—her thoughts were entirely on Sydney now. This is going to be harder than I thought, she mused, half-excited, half-terrified by the unexpected attention.
She wondered what this meant, if anything at all. Her thoughts were tangled, her emotions conflicted. Part of her wanted to get closer to Sydney, to explore this unexpected connection. But another part warned her to be careful—after all, Sydney was with Simon. And yet, she couldn't help but feel a spark of hope....hopefully?
