What’s a family without familial bonds, much less a strong father-daughter bond?

What’s a family without familial bonds, much less a strong father-daughter bond?

Family is supposed to be the biggest pillar of support when all else fails. As the saying goes, “Blood is always thicker than water.” It might not apply to everyone, but we hope that this beautiful letter will give you some hope :)

Also, for our Earthly readers, all starlings are immortal to everyone but their own kind. Starlings can only be killed by special celestial weapons wielded by anyone with magic flowing through their veins. The magic bonds with the weapon, creating a coating of poison over it that can be fatal to the person harmed.

Dear dad,

The war is finally over! We won! It has been a long seven years, but we did it! I just wish that you were here to see it too. It feels so amazing and surreal…We paraded down the streets, everyone cheering and chanting in celebration. Starlings from all over, united as we declared victory.

I still remember the day you died, the day you sacrificed your life for me. We were walking down the streets of Camelot, along the outskirts where Pisces said some of the rebels were hiding.

You wore your favourite hat with the brim pulled way down low like you always do. The area was deserted with no sound but the sound of our feet as we crept down that dusty lane, our machine guns that we stole from another one of their hideouts, ready to go.  And remember what you said?

Are you ready? Are you ready for this? Are you hanging on the edge of your seat?

Suddenly, out of one of the doorways, the bullets ripped. Within seconds, half our men were down. You had been shot in the arm, but you never gave in. You didn’t even hesitate. Before I knew it, you were in the hideout, shooting like your life depended on it…Well, it kind of did…

Then you were gone, a bullet ripping through your chest. How do you think I'm going to get along, without you, when you're gone?

Another one bites the dust. And another one gone, and another one gone.

They took me for everything that I had and kicked me out on my own. Were they happy? Were they satisfied?

That day I swore that I would avenge all of the fallen.  How long could they stand the heat? Not for long. There are plenty of ways that you can hurt a man and bring him to the ground. You can beat him, you can cheat him, you can treat him bad and leave him when he's down.

Before, I wasn’t sure if I could survive the war. But in that moment, I was ready. I knew I was ready for what I was born to do. And now, I'm standing on my own two feet with our enemies lying at our feet. I did it, dad. We did it.

Love,
Cancer

This letter is written by Cancer to her father, the late Gabriel who was killed during the war while they were exterminating one of the Darkness’ hideouts. It is a beautiful tribute to not only Gabriel but everyone else who died in those seven years for the sake of Eden.

May they rest in peace and their memories and sacrifices never be forgotten.
