Chapter 19: The Hidden Truth
The night was dark and still as YN and Namjoon made their way back to her childhood home. They moved silently, their footsteps barely making a sound on the soft earth. YN’s heart raced, a mixture of fear and anticipation thrumming through her veins. This was it the moment of truth.
They approached the old oak tree cautiously, eyes scanning the surrounding area for any sign of the attackers. The yard was eerily quiet, the only sound the rustling of leaves in the gentle breeze. YN’s breath caught in her throat as they reached the tree, the familiar sight stirring a whirlwind of memories.
"This is it," she whispered, her voice trembling with emotion.
Namjoon nodded, his expression serious. "Let’s find that list."
YN dropped to her knees, hands trembling as she began to dig at the base of the tree. The earth was cool and soft beneath her fingers, and as she dug deeper, she felt something hard and solid beneath the surface. Her heart leaped into her throat as she unearthed a small, weathered box.
With trembling hands, she lifted the box from the ground, brushing off the dirt that clung to its surface. Namjoon crouched beside her, his eyes fixed on the box with a mixture of hope and apprehension.
"Open it," he urged, his voice low.
YN hesitated for a moment, fear and excitement warring within her. Then, taking a deep breath, she slowly opened the lid. Inside, nestled among layers of old, yellowed paper, was a small, leather-bound book the list.
Her hands shook as she pulled it out, the weight of the moment pressing down on her. This was what they had been searching for, the key to everything. The names of those responsible for her father’s death, for all the pain and suffering she had endured.
Namjoon leaned closer, his eyes scanning the names on the list. "We did it," he whispered, a note of triumph in his voice. "This is it. We can finally expose them."
But before YN, could respond, a cold voice rang out from the darkness. "I wouldn’t do that if I were you."
YN and Namjoon froze, their blood turning to ice. From the shadows, figures emerged, guns glinting in the moonlight. YN’s heart pounded in her chest as she realised they had walked straight into a trap.
The leader of the group stepped forward, a cruel smile playing on his lips. "You’ve led us right to the prize," he sneered. "Hand over the list, and maybe we’ll let you live."
YN’s mind raced, panic flooding her senses. They were surrounded, outnumbered, and outgunned. But she couldn’t let them have the list. She couldn’t let her father’s death be in vain.
Namjoon stepped protectively in front of her, his jaw set with determination. "You’ll have to kill us first."
The leader chuckled darkly. "If that’s how you want to play it."
The air was thick with tension, the silence stretching out as both sides sized each other up. YN’s heart pounded in her ears, fear gripping her, but she refused to back down. This was the moment she had been fighting for, the moment to honour her father’s memory.
Just as the situation seemed hopeless, a loud crash echoed through the yard, followed by the sound of tires screeching. YN’s eyes widened as she saw a car barrel through the fence, headlights blazing. The attackers scattered, caught off guard by the sudden intrusion.
"Get in!" a voice shouted from the car.
It was Jisoo.
Without hesitation, YN and Namjoon sprinted towards the car, the list clenched tightly in YN’s hand. They dove into the backseat just as the car peeled away, leaving the attackers in the dust.
Jisoo sped through the streets, her knuckles white on the steering wheel. "What the hell were you two thinking?" she demanded, her voice shaky with a mix of anger and relief. "You could’ve gotten yourselves killed!"
"We had to get the list," YN replied, her breath coming in short, ragged gasps. "It’s the only way to end this."
Jisoo glanced in the rearview mirror, her expression softening as she saw the fear and determination in YN’s eyes. "Well, I guess we’ve got it now. What’s the plan?"
"We take it to the authorities," Namjoon said, his voice firm. "This list is the evidence we need to bring them down."
But even as he spoke, YN felt a sinking feeling in her gut. The danger wasn’t over. They had the list, but now they had to stay alive long enough to use it.
