Chapter 18: The Final Stand

YN’s heart pounded as she gripped the steering wheel, eyes darting between the fight outside and the road ahead. She couldn't just leave Namjoon to fend for himself, not after everything they had been through. Her hands trembled, but her resolve hardened. She had to do something.

Namjoon was holding his own against the attackers, but they were closing in, their numbers overwhelming. YN knew he wouldn’t last much longer. Taking a deep breath, she put the car into gear and hit the accelerator, speeding towards the men.

The car’s headlights cut through the darkness, and the men turned just in time to see the vehicle barreling towards them. They scattered, but YN swerved to the side, clipping one of the attackers and sending him sprawling to the ground. The distraction was enough to give Namjoon an opening. He landed a powerful blow to another man’s face, knocking him out cold.

"Get in!" YN shouted, her voice shaking with adrenaline.

Namjoon didn’t hesitate. He sprinted to the passenger side and dove into the car, slamming the door shut behind him. YN floored the accelerator, tires screeching as they sped away from the park, leaving the attackers in the dust.

They drove in silence for several minutes, both breathing heavily. YN’s knuckles were white on the steering wheel, and she could feel the tension radiating off Namjoon. She glanced over at him, his face bruised and bloodied, but his eyes were sharp, focused.

"Are you okay?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Namjoon nodded, wiping blood from his lip. "I’m fine. But we can’t stop now. They won’t give up that easily."

YN swallowed hard, fear clawing at her insides. "Where do we go?"

"There’s a safe house not far from here," Namjoon said, his voice steady despite the chaos. "We can regroup there, figure out our next move."

YN nodded, following Namjoon’s directions as they navigated through the city’s winding streets. The safe house was a small, nondescript building tucked away in a quiet neighbourhood. Namjoon led her inside, quickly securing the door behind them.

The inside of the safe house was sparse but functional a few pieces of furniture, some basic supplies, and a single, flickering lamp that cast long shadows across the room. YN felt a shiver run down her spine as the reality of their situation sank in.

"What now?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Namjoon sat down at the table, pulling out the documents YN had taken from her father’s house. "Now we figure out where your father hid the list. It’s the only way to end this."

YN joined him at the table, spreading the documents out once more. They worked in silence, their eyes scanning the pages for any clues. The tension in the room was palpable, both of them acutely aware of the danger that still loomed over them.

After what felt like hours, YN let out a frustrated sigh. "I don’t understand. There’s nothing here that tells us where the list is. It’s like my father wanted to hide it so well that even I can’t find it."

Namjoon frowned, his brow furrowed in concentration. "Your father was smart. He wouldn’t have hidden it somewhere obvious. He would have left a clue, something only you would understand."

YN’s mind raced, trying to think of any hidden meaning in her father’s letters or journal entries. Her eyes drifted to one of the photographs a picture of her and her father standing in front of the old oak tree in their backyard. The tree had always been special to them, a place where they shared secrets and stories.

Suddenly, it clicked. "The tree," she whispered, her eyes widening. "He must have hidden it in the tree."

Namjoon looked at her, understanding dawning in his eyes. "It makes sense. If it’s buried there, it’s been right under their noses the whole time."

YN felt a surge of hope. "We have to go back. We have to get the list before they do."

Namjoon nodded, but his expression was grim. "It’s not going to be easy. They’ll be watching the house, maybe even the tree. We’ll have to be careful."

YN steeled herself, determination burning in her chest. "I don’t care. We have to end this."
