April arrived with a fresh sense of urgency, the air thick with anticipation. The campus buzzed with the excitement of the upcoming outdoor track season and the looming Olympics that were just a few months away. For Carl, this was the moment he had been working toward his entire life. The Greek Olympic Trials were in June, and everything he had ever dreamed of rested on his performance over the next few months.

But as the pressure mounted, so did the distance between Carl and Sofia. It wasn't intentional—Carl's rigorous training schedule, combined with the demands of his academics, left him with little time for anything else. Still, every moment they could steal together felt like a gift, a brief respite from the whirlwind that their lives had become.

Early April

The outdoor track season began in early April, bringing with it a new level of intensity. The weather had warmed, and the snow had melted, revealing the vibrant greens of spring. The track was alive with the sound of pounding feet, the sharp crack of starting pistols, and the cheers of teammates pushing each other to be faster, stronger, better.

Carl's training had never been more intense. He was up before dawn every day, running drills, working on his form, and pushing his body to its limits. His coach, Martin Callahan, was a seasoned professional with years of experience training Olympic-level athletes. Under Coach Martin's guidance, Carl had honed his skills to perfection, each day bringing him closer to his goal.

But the cost was high. Carl barely had time to breathe, let alone spend time with Sofia. Their dates had become rare, and their conversations brief, often squeezed in between practice sessions and late-night study sessions. Sofia understood—she knew how much this meant to Carl—but it didn't make the distance between them any easier to bear.

It was during one of Carl's particularly grueling practices that Sofia found herself sitting in the stands, watching as he sprinted down the track. His movements were precise, every muscle working in perfect harmony, his focus unbreakable. Sofia marveled at his dedication, at the sheer willpower it took to push himself so hard, day after day.

As she sat there, Coach Martin approached, his clipboard in hand. He was a tall man in his early fifties, with graying hair and a stern expression that softened slightly when he saw Sofia.

"Watching the star athlete?" he asked, a hint of a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth.

Sofia nodded, her eyes never leaving Carl. "I wouldn't miss it for the world. He's incredible."

Coach Martin sat down beside her, his gaze following hers. "That he is. I've trained a lot of athletes in my time, but Carl... he's something special. There's a fire in him that you don't see every day."

Sofia turned to look at the coach, curious. "What do you mean?"

Coach Martin leaned back in his seat, his expression thoughtful. "It's not just about talent, though Carl has plenty of that. It's about heart. The best athletes—the ones who really make it—have this drive, this determination that goes beyond physical ability. Carl has that. He's got the skill, the discipline, but more than that, he's got the heart. He's in this for more than just the medals. He wants to prove something—to himself, to the world."

Sofia felt a swell of pride in her chest, her heart aching with the depth of her feelings for Carl. "He's been dreaming of the Olympics since he was a kid. It's all he's ever wanted."

Coach Martin nodded. "I can see that. But it's important he doesn't lose sight of what's really important. The Olympics are just one part of his life. There's more to him than just being a track star."
