The morning light filtered through the blinds of the hospital room, casting soft stripes across the pale walls. Echo sat quietly beside Sophia's bed, watching her sister sleep. The rhythmic beeping of the monitors was a comforting reminder that Sophia was alive and healing. It had been a long night, filled with doctors, nurses, and the constant hum of activity, but Echo hadn't left her sister's side once.
Emily had left the hospital briefly, returning with two cups of coffee and a bag of pastries from the café down the street. She slipped quietly into the room, handing Echo a cup as she took a seat beside her.
"How's she doing?" Emily asked, her voice hushed.
"Better," Echo replied, her eyes never leaving Sophia. "The doctors say she'll be okay, but... it's going to take time."
Emily nodded, sipping her coffee. "She's strong, like you. She'll get through this."
Echo finally looked at Emily, a small smile tugging at her lips. "I'm not so sure I'm as strong as you think I am."
Emily leaned back in her chair, studying Echo with a thoughtful expression. "You faced down a monster to save your sister, Echo. That takes incredible strength."
Echo sighed, rubbing a hand over her tired eyes. "It doesn't feel like enough. I couldn't protect her... I couldn't stop him from hurting her."
Emily reached out, placing a comforting hand on Echo's arm. "You did everything you could. And you saved her in the end. That's what matters."
The weight of Emily's words settled over Echo, bringing with it a sense of relief. She had been carrying so much guilt, so much anger, but Emily was right. She had done everything she could, and Sophia was alive because of it.
They sat in comfortable silence for a while, the only sound the steady beeping of the monitors and the soft rustle of sheets as Sophia stirred in her sleep. Finally, Echo broke the silence.
"What now?" she asked, her voice filled with uncertainty.
Emily glanced at her, understanding the deeper question beneath the words. "We take it one step at a time. You focus on Sophia, help her heal. And when you're ready, you come back to the team. We'll be there for you, whenever you're ready."
Echo nodded slowly, appreciating the lack of pressure. "I'm not sure when that'll be," she admitted, her voice tinged with sadness.
"That's okay," Emily said gently. "You don't have to rush. We'll keep the light on for you."
Echo managed a small smile, grateful for Emily's support. "Thank you, Emily. For everything."
Emily smiled back, her eyes warm with affection. "You don't have to thank me, Echo. We're in this together."

Later that afternoon, after Sophia had woken and reassured Echo that she was going to be okay, Echo and Emily stepped out of the hospital to get some fresh air. The sun was bright in the sky, a stark contrast to the darkness of the past few days.
They walked in silence for a while, the city bustling around them, life continuing despite everything that had happened. Echo felt the weight of the past few days lifting, bit by bit, as they walked.
"I don't know what's next," Echo admitted as they reached a quiet park bench and sat down. "I thought I was ready for anything, but this..."
Emily nodded, understanding the turmoil inside Echo. "You've been through a lot. It's okay to feel lost right now."
Echo looked at Emily, her eyes searching for answers she wasn't sure existed. "How do you do it? How do you keep going after everything?"
Emily took a deep breath, thinking about all the times she had asked herself the same question. "I focus on what I can control. I take it one case at a time, one day at a time. And I lean on the people I trust when I need to."
Echo considered Emily's words, realizing how much they resonated with her. She had always been independent, always tried to handle everything on her own, but maybe it was time to let others in. Maybe it was time to trust that she didn't have to face everything alone.
"Thank you," Echo said quietly, her voice filled with sincerity. "For being here. For not letting me go through this alone."
Emily smiled softly, her hand finding Echo's and giving it a gentle squeeze. "I'll always be here for you, Echo. You're not alone."
As they sat there, the chaos of the city moving around them, Echo felt something shift inside her. It wasn't a sudden revelation, but a quiet acceptance that things could be okay. That she could heal, and that she didn't have to do it alone.
And with Emily by her side, she knew she could face whatever came next.
