Echo's breath caught in her throat as she saw Sophia slumped in the chair, bruised and battered but alive. The overwhelming relief she felt was tempered by the sight of her sister's injuries. Without thinking, she rushed forward, but Emily grabbed her arm, stopping her.
"Wait," Emily whispered urgently. "It could be a trap."
Echo hesitated, realizing Emily was right. She forced herself to take a step back, her eyes scanning the room for any sign of Paul Ramirez. The room was eerily quiet, the only sound Sophia's labored breathing.
Emily motioned for Echo to cover her as she approached Sophia cautiously. Echo's hands trembled slightly as she aimed her gun, ready for anything. Emily knelt beside Sophia, carefully checking her pulse. "She's alive," Emily confirmed, her voice a mixture of relief and urgency.
Echo let out a shaky breath, but before she could respond, the sound of slow, deliberate footsteps echoed through the warehouse. Both women tensed, their focus shifting to the doorway on the opposite side of the room.
Paul Ramirez stepped out of the shadows, a twisted smile on his face. He held a knife in his hand, the blade glinting in the dim light. "Well, well, well," he drawled, his voice low and menacing. "Look who decided to join the party."
Echo's blood boiled as she locked eyes with him. "Let her go, Paul," she demanded, her voice steady despite the fear gnawing at her insides.
Paul chuckled darkly, his gaze shifting to Sophia. "Oh, I'm afraid I can't do that. Your sister and I have some unfinished business."
Emily stood slowly, positioning herself between Paul and Sophia. "This doesn't have to end badly, Paul," she said, her tone calm and measured. "You can walk away from this."
Paul's eyes narrowed as he focused on Emily. "You think you can talk me down? I know who you are, Agent Prentiss. You think you can save everyone, but you're just like the rest of them-powerless."
Echo's grip on her gun tightened. "You're not going to hurt her. Not while I'm here."
Paul grinned, a manic glint in his eyes. "That's where you're wrong, Echo. You can't stop me. You think you're so special, working for the BAU, profiling killers. But you couldn't even protect your own sister."
The words cut deep, but Echo didn't flinch. She couldn't afford to let him get to her. She kept her focus on Paul, waiting for the right moment.
"Drop the knife, Paul," Emily ordered, her voice firm. "It's over."
Paul tilted his head, considering Emily's words, before he suddenly lunged toward Sophia, his knife raised.
Echo didn't hesitate. She fired a single shot, the bullet hitting Paul in the shoulder. He cried out in pain, the knife clattering to the floor as he stumbled back, clutching his wound.
Emily quickly moved to disarm him, kicking the knife away before grabbing his arms and forcing him to the ground. "It's over," she repeated, her voice filled with authority as she cuffed him.
Echo rushed to Sophia's side, dropping to her knees beside the chair. "Sophia," she whispered, her hands trembling as she gently lifted Sophia's head.
Sophia's eyes fluttered open, her gaze unfocused. "Echo?" she murmured, her voice weak and filled with confusion.
"I'm here, Sophia," Echo said, tears welling up in her eyes. "You're safe now. I've got you."
Sophia's lips trembled as she tried to smile, her relief palpable even in her weakened state. "You... found me," she whispered, her voice breaking.
Echo nodded, her heart breaking at the sight of her sister's battered face. "I'm so sorry, Sophia. I should have been there sooner."
Sophia shook her head slowly, her eyes filled with tears. "No... you saved me. That's all that matters."
Echo pulled her sister into a gentle embrace, careful not to hurt her. "I love you, Sophia," she whispered, her voice choked with emotion.
"I love you too," Sophia replied, her voice barely audible as she leaned into Echo's embrace.
As Echo held her sister, the sound of sirens filled the air, growing louder as the paramedics and backup team arrived. Emily stood over Paul, her expression unreadable as she waited for the officers to take him into custody.
Once the paramedics reached them, Echo reluctantly stepped back, allowing them to attend to Sophia. Emily moved to her side, her gaze softening as she looked at Echo. "You did it," Emily said quietly. "You saved her."
Echo looked at Emily, the weight of the past few days finally catching up to her. She nodded slowly, exhaustion and relief washing over her in waves. "We did it," she corrected, her voice filled with gratitude.
Emily smiled gently. "Let's get you both to the hospital."
As the paramedics carefully placed Sophia on a stretcher, Echo stayed by her side, holding her hand. The chaos of the past few days seemed to fade into the background as they left the warehouse, the sunlight breaking through the clouds above.
---
Hours later, after Sophia was settled in the hospital, Echo sat by her sister's bedside, watching her sleep. The doctors had assured her that Sophia would recover, but the emotional scars would take longer to heal.
Emily had stayed with Echo the entire time, offering quiet support, knowing that words weren't necessary. They had been through so much together, and their bond had only grown stronger.
As the sun began to set, casting a warm glow through the hospital window, Emily finally spoke. "You're stronger than you realize, Echo. You fought for your sister, and you didn't give up. That's something to be proud of."
Echo looked at Emily, her eyes filled with gratitude. "I couldn't have done it without you," she admitted, her voice soft.
Emily shook her head. "You would have found a way. But I'm glad I was there to help."
There was a moment of silence between them, a quiet understanding that spoke volumes. Echo reached out, taking Emily's hand in hers, a small smile playing on her lips. "Thank you," she said simply.
Emily squeezed her hand gently, her gaze warm and reassuring. "Always."
As they sat there, the darkness outside deepening, Echo felt a sense of peace she hadn't felt in a long time. She knew there would be challenges ahead-both in her work and in her relationship with Emily-but for now, she was content. She had her sister back, and she had Emily by her side.
And that was enough.
