Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Olivia's eyes fluttered open, and she looked around the room, her gaze finally landing on her parents. "Mom, Daddy," she whispered, her voice weak but recognizable. Julia choked back a sob, leaning over to kiss her forehead. "You're okay, baby," she said. "You're safe now."
Elvis felt a weight lift from his chest. He took his daughter's hand, feeling the warmth of her skin. "We're all here," he said. "You're going to be okay."
Olivia's eyes searched his face, looking for reassurance. "What happened?" she asked
Elvis took a deep breath, trying to find the words to explain the horrors of the night. "Billy threw a party," he began. "Things got out of hand, and he hurt you and Rose."
Olivia's eyes widened with fear. "Rose?" she croaked
"She's okay, just a little bump on the head," Julia said, her voice soothing. "We're all here, and we're all going to be okay."
Olivia's eyes searched the room, her gaze landing on James, who was sitting quietly in the corner, his face a mask of worry. She managed a small smile. "James?"
James jumped up and rushed to her side, his eyes brimming with tears. "Liv," he murmured, taking her other hand. "You're okay."
Olivia's smile was weak, but it grew as she squeezed their hands. "What happened to Billy?" she asked, her voice a mere whisper
"Tell her, dad! Tell her how you walloped him! Bam, bam, bam! Wham!" James looked at their father with admiration, shaking the man in excitement
Elvis squeezed his son's shoulder gently. "Not now, James. Your sister needs her rest." But the corners of his mouth twitched up in a brief smile, the first one since that fateful night
As the days turned into weeks, Olivia's condition gradually improved. The bruises on her body began to fade, and her spirits lifted. The hospital had become a second home, filled with the steady hum of machines and the soft murmur of nurses' footsteps. Each day brought a new challenge, but the Presleys faced them as a united front
Elvis had made it clear that Billy was not to be mentioned in their presence, and the children knew better than to bring it up. The fear had turned into a quiet anger, a simmering ember that fueled their collective resolve to move forward
A nurse was helping Olivia regain strength in her muscles by having her walk down the hallway and back but Olivia was hesitant one day as the nurse decided to not hover by her
Julia watched her daughter with a mix of pride and anxiety from the doorway, her hand clutching the frame. "You're doing so well, Olivia," she encouraged
"I can't do it, momma." Olivia sighed, stopping halfway down the hallway
Julia hurried to her side, her eyes filled with concern. "What's wrong, baby?"
"I'm such a burden to you and daddy, for making you go through all of this." Olivia sniffed
Julia's eyes filled with love and determination. "Never say that, Olivia," she said firmly. "You are never a burden. You are our daughter, and we love you more than anything in this world. We're just doing what we need to do to keep you safe and healthy. Now come on, let's get you back to bed, okay?"
"But I'm tired of laying in bed and doing nothing." Olivia sighed
Julia took a deep breath, bending down to look into her daughter's eyes. "You're not doing nothing, sweetheart. You're fighting to get better, and that's the most important thing you can do right now. Your dad and I are taking care of everything else. You just focus on healing." She kissed her daughter's forehead softly
