Silence fell, and, after a few seconds, Marie burst into a desperate cry and soon Elliot joined in.

«I'm sorry... I'm sorry» Sheldon took Marie from Penny and rocked her to calm her down.

«Sheldon...» Leonard spoke in a low and soothing voice, while cuddling his son to comfort him. «Truth is that I needed to get away from Pasadena for a while. I couldn't take it any longer»

«That's why we decided to come right away» Added Penny.

«And we are more than welcome to host you for as long as you please» Replied Amy with a timid smile.

Sheldon was still cradling his daughter, staring blankly at her little hands. «Well then. So be it» Sheldon stated, but his mind was elsewhere.

He remembered the day his Pop-Pop died. It was a warm summer evening in Texas, and the wind, howling through the trees, carried the sweet smell of brisket and baked potatoes. He remembered sitting in front of the old tree in his grandparents' garden. The grass was dry and blond, still warm from all the sun. He remembered the house porch lightly squeaking. He remembered turning around, hoping to see his Pop-Pop standing there, as always, looking after him from behind. But the porch was empty.

That was the very first time he felt lonely.
