This is just a Theory but....
Natsu went through a ton of emotional trauma at the end of the GMG. There was future Lucy's death, along with the dragons (plus mentions of his father), knowledge of who killed Frosch (the killer was only revealed to Natsu), and the impending fact that Acnologia might take over the world in seven years time. And now, the death of Igneel, the King of Fire Dragons that rise him like his own. As far as we know, Natsu never spoke to anyone about any of this. And the thing is, he wouldn't Natsu is an expert at covering up his emotions. Very rarely is he open in his feelings outside of excitement/happiness and rage. It might not seem like it, but Natsu in actuality is a very closed book.
So the ball at the palace arrives and Natsu actually disappears for the majority of the day. Everyone seems to take some notice of this. Then, he shows up in the most over the top manner: with the stolen King's crown on his head and is boisterously shouting from a balcony.
From other characters' perspective, this is a normal thing for Natsu to do. He's just being his goofy, crazy self. But if you look at everything that has just happened to him, along with his habit of bottling things up, it seems more like he's over compensating and it all feels very forced.
Where ever Natsu disappeared to we don't know, and I doubt it'll ever be revealed to us, but I have my bet on him being off somewhere by himself, trying to keep down his emotions enough to be able to act normal around a ton of people. When he finally goes out, he puts on that show to hide that that he is hurt and under a lot of stress, that he is not as indestructible as he seems.
And the worst part of it all is that his plan actually works. No one notices anything is off. No one knows that Natsu is beginning to hit his limits.
This is why I'm so worried about what has happened to Natsu this current Tartarus arc. When He witnessed his, dear father Igneel, die right infront of him, if you take a good look at the scene you will notice that he was going to loose it, as he was probably extreme amount of rage, vengeance, and disappointment in himself for not protecting the one he has been searching for most of his life, is now all lost and gone, right before his eyes. But then again, somehow Igneel's words get through him...and he picks himself up again, maybe it was something inside him telling him that it's too early. With each thing happening to Natsu, more and more cracks appear to be showing in his facade. Eventually, he's going to break and it won't be pretty.
But seeing him being this emotionally "stable" really does show how strong he is, both physically and mentally. I highlighted the word "stable", because we don't know if he'll break down anytime in the future (that'll be Mashima's decision).
If he does break down, however, it won't just be him crying a bit or something like that. It'll be a massive spectacle that everyone will end up seeing, and will probably cause a change in Natsu (and maybe some of the other guild members). Maybe even completely open up his inner demon and turn into E.N.D. all in his own without the book, Or even all the old memories of his past life will return.
He IS slowly cracking up, and Mashima's deliberately setting him up for his massive fall. It'll end up being one of the more memorable moments of Fairy Tail.

There may or may not be a major emotional break down from our favorite Fire Dragon Slayer....Will we be ready for it.....?
