"THIS IS ZOLA," Alex presented as the slideshow turned to a picture of an adorable baby. Sage smiled, happy that she was going to help Derek treat her.
All the residents and attendings were gathered in a meeting room for Alex's presentation on all the kids. Sage was happy for her best friend, but also a little jealous because they all knew he had chief resident in the bag. But she felt a little better since Alex promised to mention she helped him with some of the planning.
"She's 6 months old, born with spina bifida..."
"Adorable African children," Cristina, who stood beside Sage, scoffed and crossed her arms, "Shameless ego stroking. Karev is a genius."
"Yeah," Jackson, who was on her other side, leaned in so the two women could hear him whisper, "He's single-handedly stealing chief resident out from under all of us, and we're helping him do it. Especially you."
He glared at Sage, but there was no real venom behind his gaze. She rolled her eyes, and crossed her arms.
"I owed him after I made him take care of the bitch with me," she defended herself, looking away from Jackson. "And you're all helping too. You agreed to take care of them.
"Well, we can't exactly refuse to treat little sick kids without making ourselves look bad," Jackson pointed out.
"Oh, he's a genius," April, who was sitting in front of them, said, "Or..." She said something in a language none of them could understand. The trio all looked at her, expressions of confusion etched on all of their faces. "That's what they say in Swahili," the redhead explained. They all just stared at her for a second before Cristina spoke up again.
"He only has a shot because I've been benched. The playing field has been leveled." She side-eyed them all, "You're welcome."
"My Alzheimer's trial kicks African-orphan ass. It kicks all of your asses," Meredith declared, looking up from her chair.
"Do you all wanna keep it down over there?" Chief Webber turned in his chair to glare at the group of residents, , "I'm trying to listen to what appears to be the next chief resident talking."
"Before we go, I just want to say thank you to all of you for your participation. It, uh, truly means more than I could say." Alex finished his presentation and the attendings began to clap, slowly.
"Slow clap," Jackson scoffed, rolling his eyes, "They're giving him the slow clap. Come on. I'm not giving him the slow clap. Ridiculous."
