season 8, episode 3 - take the lead
⋅──⊱༺ 🩺🫀💋 ༻⊰──⋅
TODAY WAS THE DAY. The day that the fifth year residents would take the lead in their own surgeries. Of course, the attendings would still be there to supervise, but they would be in charge.
"Is it up yet?" Sage asked anxiously as she and Alex joined Meredith and Cristina by the nurse's station.
"Not yet," Meredith told the duo, shaking her head.
Sage was performing an aortic arch repair, and she was ready. She read up on them, and practiced, and got all the necessary scans on her patient. Now, she just wanted to know which O.R. she would be in.
"Hey, have you heard anything about Zola?" Alex asked.
Meredith and Derek still hadn't heard anything about Zola yet, and their friends knew they were waiting on a call from Janet, their social worker.
"I haven't heard anything," Meredith shook her head.
"And she's clipping her first aneurysm," Cristina added as the group began walking to the O.R. board, "Are you sure you don't want to start with something simpler?"
"Yeah, like juggling chainsaws?" Alex said, earning himself an elbow to the ribs from Sage, "Ow!"
"Oh, thanks," Meredith said sarcastically, glaring at the Karev boy, "That's helping."
"Hey, is it up yet?" Cristina asked when Jackson and April came into view.
"It's going up now," April informed them.
"Have you heard anything?" Jackson asked Meredith, obviously referring to Zola.
"Haven't heard anything," Meredith replied shortly, and Sage knew she was tired of answering that question.
"How are you even here?" April asked her, shaking her head.
Sage understood her point. If her hypothetical child had been taken away, she could be a wreck. But then again, if Meredith Grey stopped working every time something traumatic happened to her, she would just never work.
"Well, there's nothing I can do, and I have to do something, so I might as well do this," Meredith answered, shrugging.
"It's up!"
Their assignments were up on the O.R. board, a nurse finishing scribbling down Alex's name.
Sage felt a pang of relief when she saw she had O.R. four, an O.R. she happened to like more than some of the others.
"O.R. three. Yes!" Cristina grinned, doing a little dance before walking back over to the group, "I love O.R. three."
"Bowel resection?" April raised an eyebrow when she saw Alex's surgery, "I thought you had a peds case."
