Trees blurred past the car window, mixtures of green and brown blending into one another as the vehicle sped down the highway. Callie rested her elbow against the center console, head perched on top of her palm as she listened to the music coming from the stereo. The soft voice of Buck Owen's causing a soft sleep full haze to reside in the back of her eyelids.
Motley, having already been asleep for half of the cars drive, gently jostled in Callie's lap. His ears twitching at the sound of passing cars. Callie felt a soft smile grace her lips as Motley buried his face into her lap, her hand coming to rest on top of his dark fur.
"Did you remember to pack plenty of clothes?" Her mother asked, glancing over her shoulder before changing lanes.
"Yes, mama." Callie responded, voice laced with tiredness.
"What about an extra toothbrush?"
"Mama, I can buy a new toothbrush."
She let out a huff of breath at her daughter's response, her anxiety slowly building up the closer they got to the California border. "I know that sweetheart," She mumbled, giving Callie a soft pat on her knee. "But, I just thought that since you'd be by yourself for the next couple of months, you could forget to buy the necessities that your need and-"
"Mama," Callie cut off, eyeing her mom with probity. "I'll be fine, beside Lisa will be there. You trust Lis, don't you?"
The car fell into an awkward silence, the soft drumming of her mother's finger against the steering wheel being the only noise. Callie cleared her throat, regretting the question the moment it slipped past her lips. Her hand briefly tightened against Motleys fur, a wine emitting from the poor feline.
Lisa had been a touchy subject since the accident.
Memories of shouting and slamming doors that resided inside the hospital room would always find a way to the forefront of her mind. Callie of course would never blame her sister for what had happened that night nor would she have kicked her out of their home because of it. No. Instead, Callie had felt guilty herself. Thinking that because of her, her family had slowly began to crumble.
The plan for Callie to move to California and live with her sister for the summer hadn't been her mother's idea. Instead, the proposal had been her father's. A proposal that took half a year for your mother to finally agree on.
"Just think how good it would be for her." Her father said from the living room, his voice booming through the small ranch styled house. "I mean, the closest neighbors we got are the damn cows in the farmhouse."
"I now that, Mark, but I don't think it would be safe sending her hours away from the house when we could just-"
"And, when she goes off to college she would be used to the outside world, and not some stupid farm animals."
Callie leaned against the bottom railing of the stairs, listening to her parents arguing back and forth with displeasure. She didn't want to be kicked out like her sister, she was a good kid. Straight A's, perfect attendance and she always maintained a good attitude about everything.
So, why was she being punished?
"Mark," Her mother tiredly mumbled, rubbing her eyes with disdain. "I see what you're saying, I do, but I don't want anything else to happen to my baby." She took in a shaky breath. "Not like last time."
