Kael touched his lips, a lingering warmth still present from the kiss they shared. She kissed me back, he thought, the realization stirring something deep within him. It was a simple act, yet it carried a weight that made his heart quicken. As he watched Mei Lin drift deeper into slumber, he couldn't help but marvel at how different she was from any woman he had ever known.
Over the years, Kael had taken many virgins—women sent to him by his father or brothers, mere pawns in the power plays of the royal court. They were nothing more than vessels to satisfy his darker desires. He had never cared whether they felt pleasure or pain; their suffering was his amusement, their bodies tools for his pleasure. Once he was done with them, they were discarded without a second thought.
But Mei Lin was different. From the moment he laid eyes on her, he felt a connection, something that transcended the physical. He didn't just want to possess her—he wanted her to be his, truly and completely. The idea of her as the mother of his children stirred a new longing in him, one he had never felt before.
Unlike his brothers, who had children and concubines, Kael had never felt the need for such things. He had always been content to focus on his duties, dismissing the idea of family as unnecessary. But now, with Mei Lin, everything had changed. He wanted her as his consort, not just a concubine. He wanted to see her by his side, not just in his bed. She was the only woman he could ever imagine bearing his heirs, and he was determined to make it so.
That same evening, Kael approached his father with the request. He had prepared himself for resistance, but he was resolute. "Father, I wish to make Mei Lin my consort."
His father, the King, looked at him with a mix of surprise and scepticism. "A consort?" he repeated, his tone laced with doubt. "Kael, you know that only women of status or those who have made significant contributions to Arendelle can be made a legal wife. What makes this servant girl deserving of such an honour?"
Kael's jaw tightened, but he remained calm. "She may not have status or wealth, but she has captured my heart. I want no other woman but her."
The King sighed, leaning back in his chair. "A prince must think of the future. A wife is more than a lover; she is a partner in the politics of the realm, a mother to your heirs. A woman of usefulness must be your legal wife. How will you secure your lineage with only one woman, especially one with no standing?"
Kael's resolve didn't waver. "I will make her my wife, regardless. I ask for your blessing. A blessing from a father to his son."
His father's expression softened, but there was still a hint of hesitation. "For now, I will make her your concubine. Let her bear a son or two, and then we can discuss the possibility of elevating her status."
Kael knew it was the best he could hope for at the moment. A concubine was far from what he desired, but it was a step closer to making Mei Lin his. He nodded, bowing slightly in acknowledgement.
As Kael left the King's chambers, he felt a mix of frustration and determination. He had hoped for more, but he would settle for what he could get—at least for now. His thoughts were focused on Mei Lin as he made his way to his physician.
"I want her carrying my heir as soon as possible," Kael said, his tone leaving no room for doubt. "Do whatever is necessary to aid the process."
The physician bowed deeply. "Yes, Your Highness. I will examine her tomorrow and ensure everything is in order."
Satisfied, Kael turned his attention back to his duties, knowing that soon he would be returning to his castle with Mei Lin by his side. The capital, with its endless intrigues and power struggles, had always been a place he despised. But with Mei Lin, he felt a renewed sense of purpose—a reason to endure it all.
As the day drew to a close, Kael finished tying up the loose ends of his work. He couldn't wait to return to Mei Lin, to hold her in his arms again, and to remind her that she was his. With everything in place, he finally allowed himself to rest, his thoughts consumed by the future he envisioned with her—a future where she was not just his concubine, but his wife, the mother of his children, and the only woman he would ever need.
