The sky stretched endlessly above them, a canvas of brilliant blue as Kael and Mei Lin approached Kee, the majestic dragon who awaited them at the edge of the palace gardens. Kee's massive body shimmered with iridescent blue scales, each reflecting the sunlight like a thousand tiny mirrors. His eyes, glowing with intelligence and affection, were locked onto Mei Lin as she approached. She could sense the excitement radiating from him, and her heart began to race with anticipation.
Kael climbed onto Kee's back first, then extended his hand to Mei Lin, helping her up. She hesitated for just a moment, feeling the solid warmth of the dragon beneath her feet, before settling into place in front of Kael. His strong arms wrapped securely around her, pulling her close against his chest. The sensation of his warmth and the solidness of his embrace sent a thrill of safety and comfort through her. She leaned back slightly, feeling his heartbeat steady against her, matching the rhythm of her own.
Kee's wings unfurled with a mighty whoosh, casting a shadow over the garden below. With a powerful leap, Kee launched into the air. Mei Lin gasped as they were lifted off the ground, the palace and its surroundings shrinking beneath them. The rush of wind swept past them, carrying away all her lingering fears and uncertainties.
As they soared higher, the world below unfolded like a grand tapestry. Mei Lin's eyes widened in awe as she took in the vast landscape beneath her. Rolling hills covered in lush greenery, rivers winding like silver threads, and distant mountains capped with snow—it was a sight unlike anything she had ever seen. The air was crisp and pure, filled with the scent of pine and fresh earth, mingled with a hint of the ocean far to the west.
Mei Lin couldn't contain her joy. A laugh bubbled up from her chest, and she turned her head slightly to look back at Kael, her eyes shining with happiness. "This is... incredible!" she exclaimed, her voice barely audible over the wind.
Kael's lips curved into a rare smile. "I'm glad you like it," he replied, his voice warm and filled with something she couldn't quite place—pride, perhaps, or satisfaction in sharing this moment with her. He held her even closer, his grip possessive yet gentle, as if he were afraid to let her go.
The ride was exhilarating. Every beat of Kee's wings sent them soaring higher, and every dip and turn made Mei Lin's heart race with excitement. She felt as if she were truly on top of the world, free from all the constraints and dangers of the earth below. Up here, there were no expectations, no fears—only the pure, unadulterated thrill of flight and the comforting presence of Kael's arms around her.
For the first time in a long while, Mei Lin felt a sense of freedom and happiness that she hadn't known she was missing. The sky, the wind, the magnificent view—they all seemed to cleanse her soul, washing away the dark memories of her past. She felt safe, cherished, and, most importantly, alive.
As the minutes turned into hours, the excitement gradually gave way to a deep sense of peace. The gentle, rhythmic motion of Kee's flight, combined with the warmth of Kael's embrace, lulled Mei Lin into a state of serene contentment. She rested her head against Kael's chest, closing her eyes as she surrendered to the drowsiness creeping over her. The last thing she remembered before falling asleep was the soft, steady beat of Kael's heart and the whisper of the wind in her ears. Kael's chest was really warm.
The flight took four hours, though it felt like mere moments to Mei Lin. When Kee finally began his descent, the sky was tinged with the golden hues of the setting sun. Mei Lin stirred in Kael's arms, waking from her nap just as Kee touched down gracefully in the courtyard of Kael's castle.
The castle was grand, with towering spires and walls made of stone that seemed to glow in the evening light. The courtyard was bustling with activity as servants rushed to greet them. Kael dismounted first, then turned to lift Mei Lin down from Kee's back. She wobbled slightly as her feet touched the ground, still feeling the lingering sensation of flight, but Kael steadied her with a firm hand.
Kee lowered his massive head, nudging Mei Lin gently with his snout. His eyes sparkled with mischief, and he made a playful growling sound deep in his throat. Mei Lin smiled, reaching out to pat Kee's head. "You were amazing," she whispered, feeling a strange but wonderful connection to the dragon.
Kee huffed, as if in agreement, then nudged her again, this time more insistently. Mei Lin laughed, realizing that the dragon wanted to play. She glanced at Kael, who was watching the interaction with a conflicted expression. His eyes narrowed slightly, and for a moment, Mei Lin thought he might refuse Kee's request. But then, with a reluctant sigh, Kael nodded.
"Fine," he said, his tone begrudging. "But don't tire her out too much."
Kael signalled to the chief maid, who had been waiting nearby. "Show Lady Mei Lin to my chambers," he ordered, his voice authoritative. He walked and returned to his chamber first.
Kee let out a triumphant roar and bounded off to a nearby clearing, nudging Mei Lin to follow. She glanced back at Kael, who was still watching her, a slight frown on his face. She could sense his jealousy, his desire to keep her all to himself, but she couldn't resist Kee's playful energy. As they played, Kee acted like an overgrown puppy, chasing after sticks that Mei Lin threw and rolling around in the grass. Mei Lin's laughter echoed through the courtyard, pure and unrestrained. It was a side of her that she hadn't shown in a long time, a side that was joyful and carefree.
Kael watched from a distance, his arms crossed over his chest. He couldn't help but feel a twinge of jealousy as he watched Mei Lin laughing and playing with Kee. But at the same time, seeing her so happy, so full of life, made his heart swell with something else—something that felt a lot like love.
After a while, Kee finally grew hungry, he plopped down on the grass, his massive body sprawling out as he huffed in contentment. Mei Lin, out of breath and flushed from the activity, patted Kee's head one last time before turning back to Kael, while Kee went hunting.
The chief maid was in awe. Everyone feared the majestic beast, His Highness's dragon, Kee, known as a ruthless force of destruction. To witness the formidable creature, a feared killing machine, behaving like a playful dog with the Lady was nothing short of shocking.
