Snow fell gently, muffling the sounds of the world as Jungkook stepped out of the hospital, a crumpled paper clutched in his gloved hand. The cold bit at his cheeks, but he barely felt it, too consumed by the weight of what was written on that paper. His breath misted in the frigid air, disappearing as quickly as it formed, much like the fleeting hope he once held onto.
He walked slowly, each step heavy, his eyes fixed on the ground, as though the snow beneath his feet was the only solid thing in his world. Reaching into his coat pocket, he pulled out his phone and dialed a number.
Toot...Toot...Toot...Toot...
The call rang on, unanswered, before the automated voice coldly informed him that the subscriber was busy.
Jungkook's thumb hesitated over the redial button. His breath came out in shaky puffs as he tried again.
Toot...Toot...Toot...
The same result. The message echoed in his ears as he finally lowered the phone, staring blankly at the screen. His gaze dropped to the paper in his hand, and with a trembling sigh, he crumpled it and threw it into the snow, watching as it disappeared beneath the pristine white blanket.
He boarded the bus in silence, finding a seat by the window. The city moved past him in a blur, indistinct through the fog of his breath on the glass. His fingers hovered over the screen again before he pressed the call button.
Toot...Toot...
"Hello?"
The voice on the other end was distant, almost annoyed.
Jungkook bit down on his lower lip, struggling to find his voice.
"It's snowing today,"
He whispered, his words barely audible, even to himself. "Winter has arrived."
A tear slid down his cheek, following the path of so many before it.
"Is there anything you need? I'm working right now."
The reply was curt, businesslike, devoid of warmth.
Jungkook's heart clenched painfully. "Are you coming home for dinner tonight?" His voice wavered. "You haven't been home for so long..."
The reply came sharp, almost biting, "Is there something wrong?"
Jungkook lowered his gaze to the ring on his finger, a symbol of a bond that now felt more like a chain.
