Lying to Jess had been more difficult than I had expected it to be. Jess always pushed for answers, it was in his nature, but he wanted answers I wasn't allowed to give him. Mr. Stark had been very clear about the rules we had to follow.
I had broken a few of them for my own good, but endangering not just my own but Peter's life was a risk I wasn't willing to take.
Therefore I kept our living arrangements a secret at all costs. Even if I would have to lie to the person I'd consider the closest thing to family I had- aside from Peter.
Leaving the tower by myself, however, was a rule I was willing to break. For my own sanity, is what I told myself every time guilt crept in.
Tonight, as I was walking underneath the stars, I felt no guilt. I was free to forget. This night had been everything I hoped it to be. It was fun and comforting.
A smile trailed on my face as I turned onto the street where the Avengers Tower resided.
I strolled past the bakery, the smell of freshly baked bread and sweets already lingered in the air. It crept around me like a warm blanket.
After passing a few more stores I arrived at the tower, the chill air had already sobered me up.
I stood opposite of the tower, my head raised to the sky as I searched the upper floors for activity. Hoping not to find any such thing, it would make sneaking back in much more difficult.
The rising sun reflected on the glass windows blinding me and obscuring my vision. I opted for searching the lower floors for activity before daring to enter. I looked to my left and right making sure that there weren't any cars heading my way and ran across the street.
I approached the tower and pressed my face up against the glass, my hands raised, blocking the sun from my vision. I could see through the glass, the hall seemed to look the same as when I left. It seemed as if no one had been alerted of my disappearance and it was safe to enter.
I let out a breath of relief, my tense shoulders sunk as I reached for my bag. As I rumbled through my bag, searching for my keys, a sudden gust of wind blew my hair to the side.
I tucked it back behind my ears, as I looked up from my bag. I was surprised by the sudden change of weather.
I looked around me, scanning the sky for dark clouds and watching the trees lining the sidewalk for activity, but the leaves were hanging as still as statues.
My eyebrows scrunched up as I wondered where the wind had come from.
A sudden loud bang made me look up, only to come to the conclusion the wind wasn't caused by a change of the weather.
A red and blue figure flew down the side of the building, heading to the ground at a high speed, creating a breeze.
A shriek of surprise escaped my mouth as I noticed the figure falling towards me.
Right before I was about to get hit, the person slowed down, his hand raised above his head reaching for the building, as he hung from a-.
Before I could finish my thought, realization dawned upon me, it was Peter. He hung from a web, now slowly approaching the ground as he looked down at me.
Even though he was wearing a mask, I could feel his judging stare as my cheeks grew red in embarrassment.
I realized I had just been caught sneaking back in.
The wheels in my mind had started working again, at a high speed, as I tried to come up with excuses.
Maybe I had just woken up early, and went out for a walk. Or I was sure I had seen a stray cat in need of help as I looked out my window.
