I sat down in the only empty seat I could find, right as the metro shook to life and took off.
I swiftly slid my phone out of my pocket, checking if I had any messages.
I'll be there at ten. - Jess
I sent a quick reply saying I would be there soon too. I was glad Jess had reached out to me this morning, it felt like ages since we'd seen each other.
It became more difficult to meet up now that I stopped attending school, still Jess found a way to make it work. I had no idea how he'd gotten my phone number, but wasn't surprised in the slightest. It was Jess, that was enough to answer every question I had.
I stood up when the metro screeched to a halt, the doors were swarmed with people. I waited for the group to clear before stepping out myself.
The station was as busy as the metro, a sea of people all trying to get somewhere else left me disoriented.
As I tried to push my way through the crowd, I caught a glimpse of someone familiar and warmth filled me. "Jess!" I shouted from afar with a bright smile on my face.
His tall figure stood out from the rest of the crowd as I tried to make my way to him, and pushed through two men who wouldn't give way.
His head shot my way as he heard my shouts. We made eye contact, and he smiled as he too began making his way to me. The further down the station I walked, the calmer it got until we finally reached each other.
"How are you?" I asked him, my lips turned up.
"I'm good." He nodded. "Want some coffee?" He asked as he gestured to the stairs leading to the exit.
"You know the answer." I smiled, as I led the way up the stairs. He chuckled in response, before following me up the stairs.
"Are you kidding me?" I said with a sigh, as we reached the top of the stairs. The sun that greeted me so warmly this morning had disappeared behind gray clouds.
Water was filling up the holes in the street, and people were running for cover as rain poured down on them.
"What? Are you made of sugar?" Jess asked me with a smirk, as he took a step closer to the street, almost leaving the safe covered part of the metro station.
I rolled my eyes -no I wasn't, but I wasn't exactly thrilled to take a walk in the rain. I however, was left with no choice as Jess disappeared, turning down the corner.
"Wait!" I shouted, before hurrying behind him. I pulled my sleeves over my hands and made myself as small as I could, as if that would protect me from the rain.
"Decided to brave the weather?" Jess asked, looking down at me as I finally reached him. "Shut up." I shot back at him, annoyed.
I could feel Jess' stare as I was focused on avoiding the puddles. Out of nowhere he grabbed my arm, and pulled me along with him.
"Jess?" I asked laughing, bewildered by his sudden action. He didn't react as he made his way through the crowd on the sidewalk, still holding on to me. My heart fluttered at his touch, as I tried to ignore a familiar feeling of longing.
Before I could question him again, we came to a halt. I looked up, we were in front of a coffee shop. Not just a coffee shop, the one I'd been going to since I was a kid. I smiled as nostalgia hit me when we stepped inside.
"I thought you said you wanted to get out of the rain?" He told me. I nodded gratefully, before quickly stepping inside.
The familiar warmth of the shop embraced me, I felt safe and comfortable here. I was grateful for the shelter from the rain. "Good idea." I complimented Jess, who was looking around the shop.
