"We're witnesses."

_______________

When Lily wakes up next morning, she's glad to find herself alone in her dormitory. For a moment, she hopes that last night had been a nightmare, but the strange trunks and the unmade beds tell her otherwise. At least Pansy didn't kill her in her sleep.

She sighs as she reluctantly gets out of bed and gets dressed. When she enters the Great Hall for breakfast, the first thing she sees is Draco, who seems to be entertaining a large group of Slytherins with a very funny story.

As she passes, Draco does a ridiculous impression of a swooning fit and there is a roar of laughter. Seeing neither Daphne nor Blaise anywhere, Lily chooses to sit opposite her brother at the Gryffindor table. She doesn't return his greeting, though he sounds upset.

"Ignore him," Hermione says, sitting beside Harry.

"Just ignore him, it's not worth it..."

"Hey, Potter!" Pansy shrieks.

"Potter! The Dementors are coming, Potter! Woooooooo!"

Lily rolls her eyes at her as George drops into a seat next to Harry.

"New third-year timetables," he says, passing them over.

Lily takes a mental note to get hers later.

"What's up with you, Harry?"

"Malfoy," Ron answers, sitting on George's other side and glaring over at the Slytherin table.

George looks up in time to see Draco pretending to faint with terror again.

"That little git," he says calmly.

"He wasn't so cocky last night when the Dementors were down our end of the train. Came running into our compartment, didn't he, Fred?"

"Nearly wet himself," Fred agrees, with a contemptuous glance at Draco.

"I wasn't too happy myself," George says.

"They're horrible things, those Dementors..."

"Sort of freeze your insides, don't they?" Fred adds.

"You didn't pass out, though, did you?" Harry asks in a low voice.

"Forget it, Harry," George tells him bracingly.

"Dad had to go out to Azkaban one time, remember, Fred? And he said it was the worst place he'd ever been. He came back all weak and shaking... They suck the happiness out of a place, Dementors. Most of the prisoners go mad in there."

"Anyway, we'll see how happy Malfoy looks after our first Quidditch match," Fred says.

"Gryffindor versus Slytherin, first game of the season, remember?"

Lily shakes her head. Maybe it's a good thing Draco's distanced himself from her or she'd have to listen to him boast about his broomstick and Quidditch skills (which he doesn't quite have) all day. The only time Harry and Draco had faced each other in a Quidditch match, Draco had definitely come off worse.

Feeling somehow even more depressed, Lily tunes out all the conversations around her and stares at the table with a blank gaze.

"Lily?" Someone pokes her shoulder, causing her to come back to reality.
