Part 2-The glade

After Blondie helped me up, the boys just stood there and looked at me. One by one inspecting every inch of me. It didn't take long before they realized I was just like them but with longer hair and more feminine features. Soon enough all the boys were back to their job, except blondie. He said he wanted to give me a tour of this little village they had.

"-I'm Newt second in command, this is what we call "the glade" we built it by ourselves, one hut by one. It took at least five months to build" he said proudly looking at the huts.

At first I didn't understand why it took so long for them to build all the huts, I mean- it was just huts, made out of wooden planks tied together by ropes. And as if he could read my mind he answered my question without me even asking.

"-We get supplies once every week, we didn't get all the wood at once so we built the most necessary at first and then when everyone had a bed or at least a hammock. We built the rest."

He showed me the glade and where I was going to sleeping in the night. He introduced me to the gladers.

"-This is Alby, he was the first in the glade and there for also the first in command, he had to spend a whole month in here alone"

"-Why was he alone" I knew I was asking a lot of questions, but how else was I supposed to learn about them?

"-Remember I said they send up supplies once every week?" I nodded for him to keep going
"-Once in a month they even send up a new greenie with the supplies. And someone had to be the first right?"

There was that word again "greenie". I still couldn't understand what they meant by it but I just nodded to him. Pretending to understand.

He introduced the rest: Gally, he was the grumpy one and then there was Jeff the "doctor",we had Ben, zart and last but not least we had frypan, I don't think that's his real name though. Oh and newt!

I was grateful for the introduction, but even if Newt hadn't told me I would have noticed that Gally maybe wasn't the merriest person in the glade. That probably was Newt, he looked happy all the time and as soon as the other gladers saw him they'd light up. Newt was probably the kindest to me, since he was the only one I had a real conversation with.

Suddenly Alby comes up to me, and signals to Newt that it's time for him to also get back to work.

"-Hi, I'm Alby. Nice to meet you. I want to show you something,could you come with me?" He was tall, dark and his low voice almost made me jump.

"-Mhm"

He turned around and headed towards a big tree. I almost had to jog to not fall behind, his legs were almost twice the length of mine. I didn't have to jog for long before we arrived to a tall ladder leading up to the platform.

We began to climb, Alby looked at me like he wanted to calm me down.

"-It's nothing you have to worry about, I've been here a billion times and not once has anything gone wrong."

I wasn't worried, height was something I didn't fear. I would sometimes close my eyes and imagine that I was sitting on the top of a high tree in the middle of a summer rain. Feeling the warm breeze and the cold raindrops on my bare skin.

The platform was higher up than I expected, but I still wasn't scared. The view kept me occupied, you could see everything up here, the medjack, the huts, the kitchen and all of the boys. They looked like miniature dolls down there.

"-This is the tree house it's really beautiful huh? Every month I show the new greenie this place and tell the three simple rules of the glade. One you never go behind those walls, two you do your tasks and three you NEVER harm another glader. Understood?"

I was still occupied by the amazing view but I successfully managed to give him a little "I understand"

"Good, I'll leave you here to admire the view some more. Just come down when you're done."
He begins climbing down and that's when I decided that this is where I would come if I ever felt sad.
