It's just for two weeks. Two weeks with them and then I'll be back at school with my friends. I kept repeating that over and over as I approached my house. I took a deep breath before going inside. Of course, my parents were too busy to pick me up at the train station, so I had to find my way home.I opened the door and was greeted by no one, not even the elves. The whole estate was grey and cold, I never felt at home here. I walked through the foyer and down the long hallway to the living room. A soft piano melody was playing, courtesy of my mother. My father was sitting on the couch reading a book with no cover.
I dropped my bags down on the ground, trying to make my presence known.
"I'm home" I cleared my throat. My mother was the first to notice me, she got up and hugged me. Her hugs were always quick; she made sure to hover her hands over my back. She always acted like I was infected when it came to her giving me physical touch.
"Oh Maeve dear, I'm so glad you made it here safely. Now, you must tell me everything happening at school. How are Theo and Daphne? Do you have your eye on anyone special?" She rambled on, even though she was talking fast, she still spoke so elegantly.
"Merlin Josephine, give her a minute to breathe." My dad had yet to talk to me. Not even a hello.
"Sebastian, aren't you going to say hello to your daughter? She's been gone for months!"
"Hello Maeve, classes going good?" He didn't put down his book; he didn't look up at me.
"Yes, Dad, classes are fine."
"Good, the elves are in the kitchen finishing up dinner. Why don't you go upstairs and unpack."
I went upstairs to my bedroom; it was the only place in the house that had color in it. I never understood why they needed such a big house; it was only us three, after all. I changed into a pair of leggings and a jumper and waited until dinner was done.
I had begun falling asleep on my bed until one of our elves popped in. Penny has been with us for 16 years; I grew up with her as my only source of interaction.
''Mrs wanted me to come get you for dinner.'' She reached out for my hand and we apparated to the dining room. It was a long black table, aligned with chairs that never got used. Penny served the dinner she had prepared: chicken with a side salad. We sat in complete silence; the only sound was the silverware clanking on the plates. Dinner was always like this; nothing had changed.
''You're still with that Montague boy, I hope? His family is set to donate to our fund.''
Graham and I dated on and off for two years. He was, sadly, my first everything. He was cruel and always picked on the younger students and, eventually, me. It started with him telling me what to wear, then what to say and how to act. Our families were close business partners; It was always crucial that I was with him.
''Uh, no actually, I ended things right before school started.'' I was surprised Graham's parents never told mine. Maybe they didn't even know.
He dropped his fork on the plate, closed his eyes, and exhaled sharply.
''You always break up, You'll get back together in due time.''
''Actually, we won't. He's a pretty terrible person. It's over, for good.''''Oh please, he's a young boy, of course he isn't going to be a saint. Sometimes, you just have to do what's best for our family.'' I could see his jaw tightening.
''Well darling, Maybe there's someone else for her. Plenty of nice boys at that school.'' My mother put her hand on his; I could tell she was trying to calm him down.
''I don't understand why you both are so fascinated with who I'm with. I could date a Weasley, and our family would still be fine.'' I don't know why I brought him up; he was the first person to come to mind.
''Tell me you're joking, that family is nothing more than dirt poor blood-traitors. Do you not care about our reputation?''
''I was just trying to make a point, Dad.'' I didn't want to be here anymore. Anywhere else would be better. ''May I be excused.'' I closed my eyes, hoping he would say yes.''Yes, dear, go ahead.'' My Mum gave me a sympathetic smile.
''And don't think we're done having this conversation, Maeve.'' his voice echoed through the hallways I was walking down.
I crawled into bed, Not having the energy to change. It was only the first night here, and I already wanted to get the hell out.Just 2 more weeks.
