After getting back from my spa session, I change into a pair of shorts and make myself comfortable on the bed. About 30 minutes into starting my econ essay with Ryan on FaceTime, I get an email from Rick, the agent Coach Riley hooked me up with a couple of months prior to getting drafted, updating me that he's finalised my contract negotiations with the Lakers and all the important paperworks are finally signed.
RICK Sent a copy of the contract to your email. You'll also recieve a paperback copy in the post by Friday. WELCOME TO THE NBA.
I click on my email and scan through the document.
"Holy shit." I say before I can stop myself.
CHARLIE Rick. How?
RICK I told you I'd get you the big bucks.
You're welcome.
Now you make it through the summer league and training camp, impress those mangers and coaches, earn a spot on the regular season roster. Kick ass at the preseason games and make it into the lineup for the regular season. And I'll be adding some figures to your contract.
He makes it sound so f*cking easy but we all know how hard it is for a new athlete in the professional world.
RICK You think Division One is tough? NBA is a 100 x worse man. You've got more eyes on you Charlie. You need to prepare your mind and your body.
CHARLIE I know that.
RICK Good.
You got a girlfriend or a wife?
CHARLIE Yes to the girlfriend, no to the wife.
RICK Is it serious?
CHARLIE Yes. Very.
RICK Well. We'll see about that.
CHARLIE What do you mean?
RICK Being a WAG of a professional athlete isn't exactly an easy task. You gotta prepare her. And she's gotta sign some forms. I'll have them ready by Monday.
CHARLIE Forms?
RICK Yes. Non disclosure forms. Sexual consent forms. Shit like that.
CHARLIE Sexual consent form?
RICK Do you know how many women have ruined pro athletes careers with rape allegations?
Fuck.
