[Maxxine
It was a normal day as usual. I woke up early for breakfast and basketball practice. Bobby and DJ drove us all too school. We sung over the radio the whole drive. We arrived to spoonervill high. Students filling up the school. I hop out grabbing my bag. I was used to the whispers around school. Everyone knew I was a lesbian. Some more supportive than others. I'd get the usual slander, people calling me slurs. Some jock writing on my locker, the usual. People called me "the dog" ever since elementary because I accidentally bit someone. God I wished my mom was here to get me through it. Than there's this certain stuck up cheerleader. Made it her job to slowly unravel my life.
I put in my locker code as Bobby stood around waiting for me. I swung open the door. I glance towards the writing on the inside, around some pictures of basketball players. As well as the picture of my mother who had passed. "Hey" Bobby says jabbing me with her elbow following with. "Here comes Mrs Bratney" she says snickering nodding towards the doors. That's what DJ and Bobby had called Her ever since middle. School. I somehow never used it though. Her glasses sitting her nose bridge. I glance toward the doors. Brittany was absolutely breathtaking. So sad it was wasted on such a asshole. I thought. She had her arm tied around her boyfriends muscles. Chad, was her so called boyfriend. She was wearing her usual pink sweater, white skirt and pink chunky sneaker to match. A white headband sitting on her head, matching nicely clean, curled brunette hair. Her fur clean and shiny along with her brushed fluffed pom for a tall. Right besides her followed Tiffany. Her BFF, she grew a tad bit tall and a tad bit chubby. Long red hair and short ears.Brittany was the absolutely perfect, stereotypical rich girl. Everyone loved her. Chad and Brittany grew closer to me. "Whaddup dyke." Chad said to me smirking. His swooped light hair gelled back. I turn back to my locker slamming it, putting my bag over my shoulder I look at him. "Hello to you to, Chad." I say crossing my arms unphased. "So sad you can't make it to our party." he says in a mocking tone, his arm still draped over Brittany. I take a glance at her. She was talking to Tiffany.
"Hm, what a bummer." I say turning away from the couple. Bobby followed close behind. "See ya later Freshie!" he calls from Behind us. Bobby takes a glance back. "They do know we're both sophomores now right?" she asks. "Hm." I say shrugging. "Too busy swimming in their pool of daddies money to give a shit." I say smiling at my own joke. "Yeah you right." she says agreeing, she starts up again. "But seriously, You really need to get them to stop calling you names, dude." she says concerned. "It's fine, I'm used to it." I say reassuring faking a smile. "Still doesn't make it right." she was quietly stuffing her hands into her pockets.
-AFTER SCHOOL-
I was practicing in the gym with the girls basketball team. Black hair up into a messy pony. The cheerleaders watching as they sit lazily on the bleachers gossiping. Or whatever they did instead of using time wisely.
Brittany was sitting with Tiffany filing her nails.
I stood, hands on knees. Sweat driping. Hair messy. Brittany always distracted me during practice.
Suddenly a cold hard ball smacked me right in the nose. Hitting my piercing to dig into my skin. The ball bounced back. I groan holding my nose stumbling back. I hear a crowd of "ohhs" and "ouch." Along with a crowd of giggles on the bleachers. Than, a voice I was waiting for broke the silence of the room, her voice echoing. "might wanna pay more attention, freshman." she says laughing covering her mouth. Her clean and pedicured nails shining. Along with her matching lip gloss. But Maxxine wasn't paying that much attention, right? I use my thumb to wipe the blood off. "I have a name y know!" I shout back to her glaring. "And I'm a sophomore!" she rolls her eyes saying something to Tiffany, making her giggle. I glare at her, hard. I clinched My fists. My nose was pulsing, the blood pulsing through my veins. God Maxxine hated her with every bone in her body. "Timeout." I say shouting stomping off into the locker room. I push open the door, making my way to the sinks. I wet a paper towel and put it to my nose. Wincing at the pain. I hear the locker door open. "Hey." My cousin, Tabitha. Stood in the doorway looking at me with a concerned look. Her fur soft and shiny. She was a cat so no one really knew they were related. She was daughter of couch Lopez making her my aunt. "What happened out there? You okay?" she asks letting out a soft chuckle. She made her way over leaning over the sinks. "Yeah, I'll be fine." I say, breathing out. Throwing away the paper towel. "Don't let Uppercrust get to you, okay?" she says looking at me with soft eyes. I always took Tabitha as my older sister. She was only a year older, being in Brittany's year. So we'd hear all the tea from the grades above. "I'm not." I say defense crossing my arms. Mimicking my cousin who stood across from me. She raises her small eyebrow. "I noticed you've been distracted recently." she says leaning in looking at me.
I look too the tiled floor, avoiding her eyes. Something about them, wanted me to tell her everything. Other times they reminded me of Brittany. "No I haven't." I say back in a harsh tone. "Maxxine." she says back. "You can talk to me y know? If Brits giving you a hard time-" I cut her off before she could finish."I said I'm fine, Tabs" I say making my way out. "see you later." leaving her in the bathroom I walk out the locker room grabbing my gym bag. My sneakers squeaking against the floor. I passed the girls playing another game. Hair swaying. Desperate to get out of the room. I pushed my hand against the cold door handle making my way out of the gym.
I sit on the nearby benches in front of the building. Elbows on my knees scrolling through my phone. The sound of doors opening made my ears shoot up. I look over to see Brittany leaving the building. Looking at something on her phone. Her cheer uniform still on. Her hips swaying as she walked. Maybe if I really tried I could get an invite tonight.I thought. I get up slowly catching up to her. "Hey Brit!" she continues to make her way to her white bug parked in the lot. "Brittany!" I shout to get her attention. She spins around groaning. Skirt spinning. "What do you want, maxxine." she says crossing her arms. Glaring at me. "Hi, uhm can I please go to the party tonight. I promise I won't draw attention to me." I ask. God, I sounded like I was begging. She continues to stare at me. "No means no, Maxxine." she says looking at me one last time before getting into her car. Her window was down. I step closer
"pleasee Brit, I promise I won't ask again." she starts her car and sets her hand in the steering wheel. We make eye contact again. Her blue eyes hitting the sun. Her eyes were also kinda pretty. "First of all." she says putting her finger into the air. "It Brittany." she snarls. "Second of all." she puts up a second finger. "Step away from my car before I call my father that you're harrasing me." she tilts her head. Flashing a sarcastic smile closing her eyes. I step back. Crossing my arms eyebrows furrowed. "It's just a fucking party!" I shout. She begans to pull out of the lot. Putting on her sunglasses. "What's gonna happen when you can't use your daddy as an excuse for everything!!" I shout to her car as she drives by with a middle finger in the air. I groan out loud. Kicking dirt. I pull out my phone. Mumbling under my breath I call Bobby. The line rings for a few seconds-"hello?"
"Hey Bobby can you pick me up?"-"uhh" she makes a wincing sound
-"sorry I'm kinda out with DJ right now."
"Oh, thats fine I'll just walk. Thanks though."
-"are you sure? I can totally ditch."
"No no it's fine really." I say into the phone as my sneaker scratch against the Rocky road.
-"alright dude." there was silence. It was only a 20 minute walk from here. And I was used to walking.
-"you're still up for pizza night right? Your place." she asks
"Yeah yeah. I didn't forget." I say letting out a small chuckle.
-"greatttt see you than Maxie." I hear her say.
"See you." I say just before taking the phone away from my ear and hanging up. I continued to walk the way to my house.
