[Brittany
After the encounter at dairy queen, me and Tiff drove back to my house. The tension in my shoulders never left. I just need a warm shower or some sort of distraction. I shot up from my seat making Tiff jump. "Jesus sweetheart, what is it?" Tiff asks giving me concerned glances by the drivers side. "Just had the brightest idea, ever" I scoffed. She raised her eyebrows waiting for me to reveal the idea. "We should throw a party tomorrow night." Tiff sat there for a moment, thinking about it. She sighed. "Baby... I don't know." I groaned. "Why nooottt." I ask dragging out the words. She gave me a look. "Do you not remember what happened last time..?" she asked softly. My eyebrows dipped, trying to remember what had apparently happened last time. Nothing came to mind so I shook my head. "No?" she let out a sigh. "Why don't you go to your moms or something? I know you're just looking for a distraction Brittany." the use of my full name made my test tighten. I made my paws into fists. She gave me a few glances as I stared out the window." I know this might be a long shot but... Why don't you just-" she cuts off thinking of her words. "maybe just try to make it up to maxxine?" I shot my head up. Is she joking?
"you do know I hate her right? And she hates me just as more. Please enlighten me how that'll work out." she shruggs and gives me a look.
"you never know." I glare at her. "well yknow what I do know."
she hums." that this is bullshit." I growl.[Maxxine
Me and dad ate our dairy queen that night. The moment we had gotten home I just wanted to sleep and forget about everything. Especially Brittany. I'm hanging out with my cousin tomorrow, so thank God I have some sort of distraction.
-The Next Day
Tabitha agreed to meet me at the gym before we went to practice. I put my hair up into a high pony. My basketball shorts hug low on my waist, my belly piercing showing. I shoved my headphones over my ears and decided to listen to Billie Eilish. I made my way over to the punching bag. I put my fists up and let out a breath, cracking my neck and my knuckles. I let out a punch, switching my position. Punching it once more, and again. The punches became more quicker, harder, my breath quickend. A certain brunette brushes Into my mind. A sudden tight feeling lingering on my chest. I finished off with one last punch. My chest falling up and down. I turn to go get a drink if water before I feel a hand on my shoulder. I jump than I realized it was just Tabitha, she gave me a soft smile with a concerned expression. "You alright? You looked pretty into it." I eventually nod as I wipe my forehead. She hands me my water bottle. "thank you" I say before taking it. Putting it to my lips and drink it like I was in a desert. But in this scenario , Brittany was the desert. Making me heat up, and my throat cotton dry. The water drips down my neck, I wipe my mouth and set the water down. "I'm taking a break." I say to Tabitha. I sit on the bench and let out a uneasy breath. She began going at the punching bag. The usual sounds filling the gym.
I look toward my phone before I pick it up. Curious on what my friends are up too, I opened Instagram. My chest rising up and down. I scrolled a few times, Bobbie posted some random shit on her story. PJ posted about a poetry slam event and some pictures. Nothing really caught my eye.
That was until I seen a familiar dog on my feed. Too familiar. I clicked on the profile. My mouth became dry once again. Knew it was her. Brittany's account was filled of just girly shit. The perfect golden girl. Nothing of party's, not even her boyfriend. I scoff. She must have a second account. Good luck getting into that one Maxxine. I told myself. Tabitha somehow managed to scare me again. "What're you smiling at?" she asks raising her brow. I hide my phone. "Nothing! Nothing just on Instagram." I say trying to be casual. She hums.
"Okay, well are you ready?" I nod and get up quickly.
We drove in her car on the way to practice. She parked into the parking lot. "Ready to see Brittany?" she smiles sarcastically. I was about to open the door till I stopped dead in my tracks. I gulp. "Brits here?" I ask trying to sound casual like my insides weren't burning at the second. "Yeah? I mean I'd suppose she would be." she gives me a look. I avoid her gaze. "Why? Are y'all in a fight or something. Wait, that's y'all whole thing." she laughs as she opens the drivers door. I sit in my seat staring at my feet and sigh. I grab my bag and open my door. I run to catch up to Tabitha as she made her way to the school gym building. My heart started beating out of my chest. Seeing her piercing blue eyes again made my chest tighten. Jeez, what was wrong with me?
I followed behind tabitha as she made her way into the locker rooms. We waved to some of the girls on our team as we made our way by.
After we got cleaned up and into our uniforms we made our ways into the gym.
I had found myself looking for a certain brunette. Part of me wanted to see her stupid pretty face.
I let out a sigh and try to get my head into the game. I let myself fall into the familiar rythem of the match. I let myself get lost. Passing the ball, scoring it, running, jumping. I was doing it all, without fail. After the match I sat to catch my breath, Tabitha made her way over. Passing me a water she sat down, focusing on something. I remove the cap from my lips.
"Do you ever.. Talk to Dina?" she asks me. I raise an eyebrow as I follow her stare. Lucky enough she was looking at Dina, her red hair in two braids. She stood pretty tall, one if the reasons she's great for the team. I shrug. " not really to be honest." I look between them both. Tabitha began biting on her nails. The realization hitting like a truck. My eyes widen "holy shit! Holy shit did you guys hook up?" I say shaking her by the shoulder. "Shut the hell up, Maxxine!" she says covering my mouth. I remove it and began asking questions once more. "Dude I want every deta-" I got cut off when a sudden burst of the gym doors bursting open. Coach stood there scanning the room. We made eye contact and she waves her hand. "Maxxine! Can I have a word please?" her voice booming through the gym. My chest felt tight. Everyone stood and looked toward my direction. It must be about Friday. I quickly stood up and jogged towards her. I nod to her. "Hey coach, what's up." she smiles at me. "Come to my office please." I let out a shaky breath. "Sure thing."
I was nervous, this could be about anything. What if she wants me off the team? What if she doesn't?
I sat in the leather chair in front of her small desk. I chew on my nails as she sits in hers. "So.. About the.." she clears her throat. "Incident, on Friday." My heartbeat getting faster by the minute. I nod.
"I would like you to know, I hope everything is alright." I stare at my shoes. "I never meant for anything to happen, coach. Really, you know I'd never do something like that." I say as I eventually catch her eye. She looks at me sincerely. "Yes, Maxxine. I know." I let out another shaky breath. "If you need some space, or a break from-" she began but I quickly gave her a respond.
"No! No... I'll- I'll be okay." I nod to her direction. I quickly stood up. "Okay Maxxine. I trust you." she says to me. I turn to look at her with my hand on the doorknob, I nod. I shut the door behind me and made my way back to practice. My eyes stayed staring at my shoes.
I heard a familiar high pitch voice , but I ignored it and tried to focus on my walking. That was until the familiar voice started to give a booming laugh throughout the locker room. I couldn't help but look up to see Brittany talking to the cheerleaders. Her perfect canines flashing a big smile, her perfect glossed lips moving. Her hair swaying along with her hips. I hate Brittany, for how absolutely stunning she is. I must've been in my own world cause because before I could walk way, the cheerleader Brit was talking to pointed at me. Making Brittany turn around and eventually we made eye contact.
We stayed staring at eachother for what felt like a decade while the cheerleaders were whispering to eachother. I heard a combination of "what's she doing here"
"I thought she would get kicked off the team" blah blah. But looking into those blue eyes, everything seemed to disappear.
That just makes me want to unravel her perfect life even more. Brittany broke the eye contact by slamming the door of her locker. She turned around making her skirt spin with her high ponytail. "You guys go one without me, I'll catch up." she says waving the cheerleaders off into the gym. Her back was turned to me, I couldn't help but stare at it. The sound of sneakers left the locker room and eventually we were alone.
I swallowed. Why are we alone? I hear Brit take a exhale as she spins back around. She crosses her arms and clears her throat.
"I suppose you came with an apology?" I stare at her, searching her face. Me? Me have an apology? I stuff my hands into my pockets and scuff my shoes on the floor nervously. "I- uh. Sorry for "accidentally" hurting you in front of the whole school, and sorry for calling you a bitch." I mumble the last part. I could feel her eyes on me.
"Now say it to my face." she says coldly. I give her a hard glare. Who does she think she is? I stare back into her eyes. "Sorry for hurting you and calling you a bitch." I repeat, louder this time. Brittany nods. "Now, I think you owe me an apology, yeah?" I say. She raises her eyebrow. "For what exactly?" Of course she's playing the victim. I shrug. "Oh I don't know, making fun of my locker, embarrassing me, calling me a dyke." I try to name everything she needs to apologize for. Each time I made my way closer to her. I stare back at her once I name everything. She glares at me and eventually let's out a sigh.
Keeping eye contact she says. "Sorry for making fun of you, embarrassing you, and calling you a dyke." she says rolling her eyes. I give her a fake smile flashing my teeth. "Great, I'll accept that till you prove me otherwise." I turn around to make my way back to the gym, until she grabs my arm. Her cold paw on my warm fur. Making my spine tingle. I turn back around with a confused look. She avoids my eyes and pulls out her phone. Her nails clicking on the screen she shows me a party invitation. I glare at the screen. "You want me to come to your party?" I ask her. She clears her throat. "I figured since we have made our apologies. Maybe you can prove that at my party tonight." her cold hand still lingering on my arm. I look down to her manicured hand on my fur and back to her. "Sure Brit, happy to be there." I eventually pull away. My chest was warm along with my face as I made my way to the gym. I swallowed. She invited me to her party?
Suddenly Brit called out. "Its Brittany!"
I smiled to myself.
I made my way back into the gym. I felt my cousins eyes on me as I walked over. "So what was that about?" she asked. I sat back on the bleachers. I was still a bit shocked she invited me to her party, why? "Maxxine?"
She asks. I look up to her. "Brittany invited me to her party." Tabithas eyes went wide. "She what?!" her voice booming as she stood up.
I rubbed my eyes. "I don't know, i don't know." I repeated to her but partly to myself. "I happened to see her in the locker room and she was all like I needed to apologize. So than I did, than she apologized and then she invited me to her party tonight." I let out a breath after explaining it. Oh my God I sound insane. Tabitha must've been in more shock than me cause she was pacing back and forth. "So.. That could mean two things." she explained. I looked at her with a confused look. "What? How? What do you mean." she shrugs.
"What if it's a trick? What if she's planning something." I lean my head back and sigh. "I don't know. Maybe let's just give her a chance." I say quietly. My cousin bites her lip in deep thought.
This was a train wreck.
