Otto called me earlier today and told me to take today off. I was surprised and relieved. Today is my first day off in weeks due to deadlines that had to be made. This was a much-needed break, and I finally had a chance to pause and breathe. I had been working so hard that all I wanted was to stay in bed all day, wrapped up in the warmth of my blankets, and escaping the outside world's demands. I was lounging in my pajamas, getting lost in Jane Eyre, a romance book I started but have yet to complete. I lost myself in the pages, each word transporting me to different worlds and adventures. The characters became my companions, their stories intertwining with my thoughts and dreams. I savored every moment, allowing the narrative to sweep me away, far from the responsibilities that awaited me outside. This morning will be about indulging in the simple pleasure of reading and letting my imagination roam free. I embraced the stillness, knowing that sometimes the best way to recharge is to pause, breathe, and allow oneself the luxury of doing nothing.
Time does fly by quickly when you're reading. I look at the clock, and it's now 11:00. I finally push myself out of bed, do my morning routine, and get dressed. Needing my morning boost, I text the girls, "Hey ladies, want to meet for coffee?"Sure, let's meet at our usual coffee house around noon."
As I stepped through the glass door, the familiar jingle of the bell above announced my arrival. The air was filled with the comforting scent of freshly baked goods mingling with the rich aroma of coffee. I made my way past the aisles, glancing at the colorful displays of products lined the shelves, each one vying for attention.
"Hey, Cary!" I hear Nicole and Maddie calling me as I walk over. "Hey, ladies!" I reply with a smile. "You look different today," Maddie says as I sit down, sipping her coffee
"What? I just put on some makeup," I laugh, looking away. They smile back.
"No, really, something's up with you. You're way too cheerful. What's going on?
Maddie's eyes narrow slightly, her suspicion deepening as she leans closer.
"Cary?" she said, trying to get my attention.
"Cary?" She calls out again, her voice tinged with curiosity and concern.
"What?" I respond, trying to sound nonchalant, but I can feel the heat creeping up my neck.
"Okay, fine," I finally admit.
"After the basketball tournament last week Saturday, Michael came over.
Maddie's eyes widened, and the room fell silent as the weight of my words hung in the air. I could feel the heat rising in my cheeks, and I glanced around at my friends, their expressions a mix of surprise and curiosity I glanced at Nichole, who was now looking at me with wide eyes. "Well?" they all chime in together, their voices a chorus of eager anticipation. I take a deep breath.
"Nichole, I hope this doesn't upset you since you and Michael talked first and never hit it off." Her expression shifts slightly, a mix of surprise and something else—maybe disappointment? "No, we never slept together; besides, I always knew he had a thing for you," she replies, her voice steady but laced with an undercurrent of emotion.
Maddie leans in closer, her eyes searching mine for answers. "So, what happened? Did he say something?"
I hesitate, the memory of our intimate conversation, the stories we shared replaying in my mind.
"We talked, He just... wanted to check in on me," I say, trying to keep my tone casual, but I can feel the heat rising in my cheeks.
"Talked? About what?" Maddie presses, her curiosity getting the better of her."
