Toni-
"Hey, come in" I say greeting Dana who just arrived at the house. "Good morning, where is Nia?" She asks following me into the kitchen. "Sleeping in actually. And in her own bed" I say and she looks at me with shock on her face.
It has been a month since the incident at the park with Nia and during that month we have all worked out a sort of routine. Dee comes over for breakfast and then we take Nia to school together, unless it is a weekend. Then I pick her up because Dee has to work, but either she comes over for dinner or we all go out to eat.
Fortunately, Nia loves this routine and between us constantly showing her that no one is going to leave her and her therapy sessions, she is becoming more independent by the day.
Unfortunately, because we are around Nia most of the day, Dee and I have not been able to have that talk that we were been supposed to have had.
"Wow I'm so proud of her" Dee says and I smile agreeing because I am proud too. This is the first time that she has not crawled into my bed in the middle of the night or early in the morning, so this is a big deal. And she hasn't had a nightmare in over two weeks so that is huge!
"I am too, but now you wasted your time driving over here because I don't think she is waking up no time soon" I say and she frowns. "I don't just come over here for Nia, I come for you too" she says and I feel my cheeks warming at her words.
I look away from warm eyes as paws sound on the floor and in walk Stitch looking like he is tired. He has been standing guard duty at Nia's door, waiting for her to a wake up and play with him. I give him some food and water, and of course some belly scratches that he begs for from both Dana and me.
When we are done (and hands are washed) we head into the living room to talk. We sit on opposite ends of the couch and face each other and I feel like I am about to be interrogated.
"You know I'm not signing them papers right?" She says breaking the building tension and I burst out laughing. "I would hope you wouldn't" I say calming down a bit.
