When you think you know somebody

Melani sighed, gathering her belongings from the floor and shoving them into her overnight bag. The dim light of Sevyn's room highlighted the tension between them. Prom night had ended in a familiar place - Sevyn's bed.

As she packed, Melani's thoughts swirled. Why did she always fall back into Sevyn's arms? He'd hurt her before, yet she couldn't resist him. They'd been on and off since freshman year, their relationship a rollercoaster of emotions.

"You leaving?" Sevyn asked, his deep voice laced with sleep.

Melani turned to face him, nodding. "Yeah."

"It's four am. There's a reason you're leaving early," Sevyn stated, his eyes narrowing.

Melani's expression turned cold. "There is."

Sevyn got out of bed, his eyes locked onto hers. "What is it?" he asked, standing in front of her.

Melani's wrist was grasped, but she snatched it away. "Not your bitch."

Sevyn's face contorted. "Why you acting out?"

Melani's gaze met his, her heart heavy. Despite his charming facade, he'd hurt her repeatedly. She thought of all the times he'd promised to change, to love her right, but it never lasted.

"I'm sorry," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

Sevyn's demeanor softened. "Stay, it's warm when you're here."

Their lips met in a brief kiss, but Melani's passion was short-lived. Sevyn's hands roamed her waist, hips, and slipped between her legs, making her break the kiss.

"You do too much," she said, her voice firm.

Sevyn raised an eyebrow. "We fucked all night, and my hand between your thighs is doing too much?"

Melani's frustration boiled over. "I have to go."

Sevyn shrugged. "I'll drop you off this afternoon."

Melani's eyes flashed. "Since when do you want to be seen with me?"

Sevyn's expression turned indifferent. "What do you mean-"

Melani cut him off, her voice laced with anger. "You think you're slick, I know your games."

Sevyn's eyes dropped, but he countered, "Us dating in freshman year of high school don't mean shit."

Melani's voice rose. "I'd known you for three months before that, and after our breakup, where did we stand?"

Sevyn's guilt was palpable, his head dropping.

Melani's eyes stung. "Right now, where do we stand?"

Sevyn's silence was deafening. Melani felt a pang of sadness. He couldn't even acknowledge their relationship.

As she looked at Sevyn, Melani thought about their past. The laughter, the tears, the broken promises. She wondered if she'd ever break free from this toxic cycle.

Melani grabbed her bag and kissed Sevyn's cheek. "I'll see you around."

With that, she turned to leave, the weight of their complicated history settling between them. Melani felt a mix of emotions: anger, hurt, and beneath it all, hope. Hope that Sevyn would one day see her worth.

As she walked out of the house, Melani thought about the long walk ahead, the questions swirling in her mind. Would she ever find love that didn't hurt?

The Atlanta morning air was crisp, a stark contrast to the warmth they'd shared hours before. Melani's heart remained heavy, unsure of what the future held.

Melani's thoughts drifted to her family, her friends, and the expectations they had for her. She was supposed to be the strong one, the one who didn't get hurt. But here she was, trapped in a cycle of pain.

As she stepped into the early morning light, Melani knew she had a choice to make. She could continue down this path, or she could find a new way.

For now, she just walked.
