Is thinking with your heart okay?

Melani woke up at 1 pm, stretching her arms above her head. She yawned, feeling the weight of the previous night's events still lingering.

---

Why did I do it again? Why did I fall back into Sevyn's arms? I know I deserve better, she thought.

---

Melani got out of bed and began getting ready for the day. She dressed in comfortable jeans and a fitted top.

As she scrolled through her phone, a flashback hit her – Sevyn's hands roaming her body, his lips on hers. Melani's eyes closed, and for a moment, she was back in his room, lost in the heat of their passion.

"Melani?" her father's voice interrupted her reverie.

Melani opened her eyes to find her father standing in her doorway.

"Hey," she replied, trying to sound neutral.

"Just checking in. you doing okay?" he asked, his tone laced with concern.

"I'm fine, Pops" Melani said curtly, not wanting to engage.

"Okay... Well, your mama said you came in late last night," he pressed on.

Melani shrugged. "Prom night. It ran late."

Her father nodded. "I know. Just be careful, okay?"

Melani nodded, feeling a mix of annoyance and guilt.

"I will. Thanks."

Her father lingered, but Melani's standoffish demeanor encouraged him to leave.

"Alright, well, your brothers and I are heading out soon. We'll see you later."

Melani nodded, relieved.

---

Downstairs, Melani found her twelve-year-old brothers, Marcus and Marvin, engrossed in a video game.

"Wasshanning" Melani said, smiling.

Marcus grinned. "Nun, whatchu on?"

Marvin chimed in, "Did you finally get some rest after that lit prom night?"

Melani chuckled. "Something like that."

The brothers teased her good-naturedly as Melani made herself a sandwich.

As she ate, Melani put on her headphones and listened to Sza's album, Ctrl. The lyrics resonated deeply – the longing, the uncertainty.

"Stalked me for some lyrics," Melani thought, Sza's soulful voice echoing her emotions.

---

"Love Galore" transitioned into "Drew Barrymore." Melani sang along, lost in the music.

Just as the album ended, Melani's phone buzzed. Her friends had arrived.

Renee and Breonna burst into the house, excitement radiating from them.

"Spill the tea, Mel!" Renee demanded.

Melani took a deep breath and recounted the events of prom night, including her hook up with Sevyn.

"Girl, what were you thinking?" Breonna asked, concern etched on her face.

Melani shrugged. "I don't know. It just happened."

Renee frowned. "Mel, you deserve better. He's not good for you."

Melani listened, nodding, but deep down, she knew she was still invested in Sevyn.

"I know, guys. But... I don't know. I just can't help how I feel," Melani admitted.

Breonna sighed. "We just want you to be happy, Mel."

Melani smiled, grateful for her friends' concern.

"I know, guys. And I appreciate it."

As they spent the next few hours laughing and joking, Melani's mind wandered back to Sevyn.

After her friends left, Melani grabbed her phone and texted Sevyn.

"Hey."

The simplicity of the message belied the complexity of her emotions.

Melani's phone buzzed. Sevyn's response.

"What's up?"

Melani's heart skipped a beat.
"Just chillin'," she replied.

Sevyn's next message made her smile.

"you gon' come over tonight?"

Melani hesitated, knowing she should say no.

But her heart had other plans.
