I spin towards the voice and immediately put my hands up as I stare at the woman who is standing in the doorway with a gun pointed at me. "It's not what it looks like," I try and tel her.
"It looks like you're alone in an apartment with my passed out wife," the woman says angrily.
Shit, "Look, nothing happened, I swear. All I did was bring her home."
The woman's eyes flick towards Wanda and then back to me, "how do I know that?"
Fuck me, how was I supposed to prove that? Thankfully a groan from the couch saved me, "Natty?" We both look over at the obviously still drunk woman who was looking between the two of us in confusion. "Why... why is your gun out?" She asks.
"Do you know her?" 'Natty' asks Wanda, motioning with her gun at me.
Wanda nods, "she saved me from a mean man and brought me home." She gives me a big grin, "thank you nice lady."
"You're welcome random drunk lady."
"Mean man?" The woman asks.
I look back to the woman and was slightly surprised to see that the gun was back in its holster. "A guy at the bar wouldn't leave her alone so I pretended to be her girlfriend and then I brought her home. I was looking for the Advil when you found me, hence why I was looking through the cabinets," I explain.
Another groan from the couch, "Natty I don't feel so good."
'Natty' goes over to the couch and picks up Wanda bridal style and heads towards what I assume is the bedroom. After several minutes of me standing in the living room awkwardly she comes back out, shutting the door behind her. When she finally turns to look at me I was expecting her to be mad, but she just looks exhausted. "I'm sorry about the gun," she apologizes.
I shrug, "it's ok. I think under the circumstances I probably would have reacted the same."
"Thank you for bringing her home and getting that guy away from her at the bar."
"Girls gotta stick together." She makes a hmm in response and things get real awkward real fast. Finally I say, "I should go."
She startles like she forgot I was there and says, "oh, yeah, right. I'll walk you out."
We head towards the door and when I'm in the hall I look at the tired woman, "goodnight Natty."
She chuckles softly, "it's Natasha."
I smile slightly, "Megan," I say as I hold out my hand. "it's nice to meet you Natasha."
She takes my hand and I'm surprised at the warmth of it, "nice to meet you too." She holds my hand loose but firm and for a second too long and when we finally let go she swallows hard and motions inside, "I should get back."
I nod, "yeah, I gotta get home. Goodnight Natasha."
"Goodnight Megan," she says softly as she closes the door.
I wait until I hear the deadbolt click into place and then I make my way back to the elevator and down to Janet who was waiting where we left her. I'm silent the entire way home, trying to figure out what the hell just happened.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
The next morning I'm in my club trying to do paperwork but I'm too full of nervous energy.
What I'm nervous about I'll never know, but my leg won't stop bouncing and the words on the papers in front of me were nothing but a blur. Sighing angrily I finally give up after an hour of trying and pull out my Bluetooth headband, slipping it on and pulling up my playlist.
Not even bothering to stretch I go to the dance floor and as the first notes fill my head I start to move. I start slow, just a simple sway that progresses into a full body spin and chaotic movements. There's no rhyme or reason to my movements, something my parents would have hated if they were alive to see it. Having grown up in the ballet and expected to be nothing less then perfect, this type of dancing was freeing and I could actually get out my emotions and energy.
By the fifth song I'm starting to sweat and by the tenth I'm out of breath and sore but I feel better. Leaning against a table I'm trying to catch my breath when someone taps me on the shoulder. I'm not ashamed to say that I did scream and so did the person who scared me. "Jesus fuck!" I yell as I turn, ripping off my headband, my watch beeping rapidly. Tapping the notification away, I take a deep breath, trying to calm my heart.
"I'm sorry!" She says, her green eyes wide.
It takes me a second to register who was in front of me, "Wanda?" I finally ask. "What are you doing here? How did you even get in?"
She holds up a familiar purple suit jacket and smiles apologetically, "you left this at my house last night and someone named Clark let me in."
Taking the jacket from her I toss it onto the table, "thanks for bringing it back, it's my favorite one."
"I can see why, it's a lovely material."
I smile at the compliment, all my suits are made from the same material as well as most of my clothes. When you find a sensory friendly material you snatch it. "Thank you." We stand there for a moment before I motion towards the bar, "drink?"
She grimaces slightly, "no I think I've had plenty. Besides, Nat is in the car. It's our anniversary so we are making a day out of it."
"Happy anniversary," I tell her. "How long has it been?"
"Ten years," she says with a smile.
"Damn, the big ten." Suddenly I have an idea, "why don't you guys come back tonight and I'll reserve the VIP room for you, my treat."
She looks shocked, "you'd do that?"
"Yeah it's your anniversary, consider it a gift."
She gives me a look, "but we've only just met."
"Then consider it a thank you for bringing back my jacket," I say with a grin.
"I don't know, I'd have to talk with Nat," she says slowly.
Grabbing a service card and a pen from the table I scribble my number on it and hand it to her, "here's my number, text me if you guys decide to come and I'll set everything up."
She takes it hesitantly, "thank you." From outside a car horn beeps rapidly, "that's Nat, patience is a virtue but it's not really one of hers." The horn beeps again, "I should.."
"Yeah, go, have a good anniversary," I say as I make a shooing motion. "And I'm serious, text me if you want the room tonight."
"I will," she says as she rushes out the door.
Chuckling softly I head back to the table with my paperwork and try to concentrate once again, but I find myself checking my phone every few minutes, until a few hours later when it chirps and an unknown number pops up.
Hey it's Wanda
