As the days passed, the tension between Aisha and Arjun grew, a subtle undercurrent that neither of them could ignore. Aisha did her best to focus on her sister and her responsibilities, but her thoughts kept drifting back to Arjun-his distant behavior, the way he seemed preoccupied, even when they were together.
One evening, after a particularly long day at work, Aisha returned to the penthouse to find Arjun already home. He was in his study, the door slightly ajar, speaking in hushed tones on the phone. Aisha hesitated outside, not wanting to eavesdrop, but something in his voice made her pause.
"...No, that's not an option," Arjun was saying, his tone firm. "We need to handle this discreetly. I don't want Aisha involved."
Aisha's heart skipped a beat. Her instincts had been right-something was going on, something serious, and Arjun was deliberately keeping her out of it. She knew she should trust him, that he was only trying to protect her, but it was hard not to feel hurt and excluded.
Arjun ended the call and stepped out of the study, freezing when he saw Aisha standing there. For a moment, they just looked at each other, the unspoken tension hanging heavy in the air.
"Aisha," Arjun began, his voice softer now. "I didn't hear you come in."
"I just got home," she replied, trying to keep her voice steady. "Is everything okay?"
Arjun hesitated, then nodded. "Everything's fine. Just business."
Aisha bit her lip, struggling with the urge to push for more information. She didn't want to fight with Arjun, but the secrecy was starting to wear on her. "You know you can talk to me, right? Whatever it is, I want to help."
Arjun sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I know, Aisha. But some things... it's better if you don't get involved."
"Why?" The word slipped out before she could stop it, her frustration bubbling to the surface. "Why can't you just trust me, Arjun? We're supposed to be in this together, aren't we?"
Arjun's expression hardened, his eyes flashing with a mixture of guilt and resolve. "I do trust you, Aisha. But this is different. It's complicated, and I don't want to put you in danger."
Aisha felt a pang of hurt at his words. "So you're just going to keep me in the dark? Pretend everything's fine while you deal with whatever this is on your own?"
"I'm trying to protect you," Arjun said, his voice rising slightly.
"I don't need protecting," Aisha shot back, her emotions getting the better of her. "I need you to be honest with me, to let me in. I can handle whatever it is, Arjun, but not if you keep shutting me out."
Arjun's jaw tightened, and for a moment, Aisha thought he might actually open up to her. But then he shook his head, his expression unreadable. "I'm sorry, Aisha. I can't do that."
The finality in his tone was like a punch to the gut. Aisha felt tears prick at her eyes, but she blinked them back, refusing to let them fall. "Fine," she said, her voice trembling with emotion. "If that's how you feel, then I guess there's nothing more to say."
She turned and walked away before he could respond, retreating to her room and shutting the door behind her. As soon as she was alone, the tears she had been holding back began to fall, silent and bitter. She hated feeling this way-helpless, excluded, like she was on the outside looking in.
For the first time since their marriage, Aisha wondered if she had made a mistake. She loved Arjun, but how could they have a future together if he refused to let her in? How could she stand by his side when he kept pushing her away?
As the night wore on, Aisha lay in bed, staring up at the ceiling, her mind racing. She knew she couldn't keep going like this, pretending everything was okay when it clearly wasn't. Something had to change, and soon, or they risked losing each other for good.
