The following morning, Emma woke up to the soft light of dawn filtering through the curtains. The warmth of Nathan's body beside her was a comforting reminder of the night they had shared. She smiled to herself, feeling a sense of contentment she hadn't known in years. But as she lay there, savoring the quiet moment, a small voice in the back of her mind reminded her of the reality they were both about to face.

Emma's thoughts drifted back to the hospital—their workplace, where professionalism and boundaries had to be maintained at all costs. It was one thing to share these intimate moments in the privacy of Nathan's apartment, but the world outside was a different story. The reality of their situation would eventually catch up to them, and she wasn't naive enough to think there wouldn't be consequences.

Nathan stirred beside her, and she turned to see his eyes flutter open, a lazy smile spreading across his face as he looked at her. "Morning," he murmured, his voice still rough with sleep.

"Morning," Emma replied, leaning in to press a soft kiss to his lips. "Sleep well?"

"Better than I have in a long time," Nathan admitted, his hand coming up to gently caress her cheek. "How about you?"

"Same," she said, feeling a warmth spread through her at the memory of the night they had shared. But as much as she wanted to stay in this moment forever, she knew they needed to talk about the realities they would face back at the hospital.

"Nathan," she began, hesitating slightly as she searched for the right words, "I don't want to ruin this, but we need to talk about what happens when we go back to work."

Nathan's expression grew serious, and he nodded, clearly understanding her concerns. "You're right. We do need to talk about it."

Emma sat up slightly, pulling the sheets around herself as she gathered her thoughts. "We both know that relationships between colleagues—especially when there's a power dynamic—can get complicated. I don't want to do anything that could jeopardize our careers or make things uncomfortable for us at work."

Nathan sat up as well, his expression thoughtful as he considered her words. "I agree, Emma. We need to be careful about how we handle this. But that doesn't mean we have to hide or pretend like nothing's happening between us."

Emma nodded, appreciating his understanding. "I know. I just want to make sure we're on the same page. I don't want anyone to think that our relationship is affecting our work or that we're crossing any boundaries."

Nathan reached out, taking her hand in his and giving it a reassuring squeeze. "We'll be smart about this. We'll keep our personal lives separate from our professional ones as much as we can. But I don't want to hide what we have, Emma. I care about you, and I'm not ashamed of that."

Emma's heart swelled at his words, and she leaned in to kiss him, feeling a sense of reassurance that they could make this work. "I care about you too, Nathan. We'll figure this out, together."

They spent the rest of the morning enjoying each other's company, making breakfast together and talking about everything from their favorite movies to their childhood memories. It was easy, comfortable, and filled with the kind of light-hearted banter that made Emma feel even closer to Nathan.

But as much as she wanted to stay in this bubble of happiness, reality eventually called. They both had to get ready for their shifts at the hospital, and Emma knew that the moment they stepped through those doors, everything would change.

As they left Nathan's apartment and walked to the hospital together, Emma couldn't help but feel a knot of anxiety forming in her stomach. The hospital was their workplace, where professionalism and decorum were paramount. The dynamics between them would have to shift the moment they stepped through those glass doors. Emma was acutely aware of this, her thoughts swirling with the possibilities of how things might unfold.
