Days passed, and Emma and Nathan continued their delicate dance between professional and personal lives. Their connection was stronger than ever, but every stolen glance, every brief touch, was tinged with the awareness that their relationship was a secret teetering on the edge of discovery.

The hospital had a way of shrinking the world around them, of making every moment between them feel simultaneously too brief and overwhelmingly intense. Between cases and late-night shifts, they found time to be with each other—sometimes in small, fleeting moments like a whispered conversation at the coffee station or a brush of hands in the hallway, and sometimes in the stolen hours after work, wrapped in each other's arms in the safety of Nathan's apartment.

But the weight of their secrecy began to bear down on Emma more heavily as time went on. She knew they had been lucky so far—no one had caught them, and their professional boundaries remained intact in front of their colleagues. But it was a precarious balance, and every time she passed by Dr. Patel or one of her fellow interns, Emma couldn't help but wonder if someone would eventually put the pieces together.

One evening, after another long shift, Emma found herself back at Nathan's apartment. The tension of the day clung to her, despite the comfort of being in his presence. Nathan had ordered takeout again, a quiet routine they had settled into, and they sat together on the couch, the city's night lights twinkling outside the window.

Emma picked at her food, her thoughts elsewhere. Nathan, always so attuned to her, noticed immediately.

"Penny for your thoughts?" he asked, his voice soft but concerned.

She sighed, setting down her fork and leaning back against the couch. "I've just been thinking... about everything."

Nathan frowned slightly, setting his food aside and turning to face her fully. "What do you mean? Is something bothering you?"

Emma hesitated, unsure how to put her feelings into words. "I guess it's just... this," she gestured between them, "us. I hate that we have to hide, that we can't just be together openly without worrying about what people will say."

Nathan's expression softened, and he reached out, taking her hand in his. "I know it's hard. But I don't want to risk your career, Emma. We've talked about this. If people at the hospital knew we were together, it could complicate things for you."

"I know," she said, frustration creeping into her voice. "I understand why we're keeping it quiet. It's just... exhausting sometimes. I hate pretending like there's nothing between us when we're at work."

Nathan's thumb gently stroked the back of her hand. "You're right. It's not easy. I wish things were different too, believe me."

She looked up at him, her eyes filled with a mix of frustration and longing. "Do you think it'll ever change? Do you think we'll ever get to a point where we don't have to hide?"

Nathan's gaze was steady, but there was a hint of uncertainty in his eyes. "I don't know. The politics of the hospital are tricky, and we both know how judgmental people can be in this field. But I promise you, Emma, I'm not going anywhere. We'll figure this out."

Emma sighed again, leaning into him and resting her head on his chest. Nathan's arms wrapped around her, and for a moment, the tension in her body eased. Being with him like this—just the two of them, away from the scrutiny of the hospital—was the one thing that made all the stress worth it.

"I don't want to lose you," she whispered, her voice barely audible.

"You won't," Nathan said firmly, his lips brushing against the top of her head. "I'm not going to let that happen."
