At the end of school, Coach Wilhelm asked the boys' basketball team to meet him in the gymnasium for an announcement.
"Dion! Hurry up or we'll be late and miss it!" I exclaim into the boys' bathroom for him to hear.
"Give me a second, I'm fixing my hair so it doesn't look bad," he explains from the bathroom counter, his blonde hair slicked in all different directions rather than the usual way he has it, down over his face.
"It doesn't take that long to do your hair. Just put it back the way you normally have it. It looks good that way."
He groans and then starts to put his hair back to normal. "Fine, happy now?" He asks when he's finished.
I nod. "Now let's go or we really will be late! You know what? I'm not waiting for you any longer," I say as I take off towards the gym. He calls after me once and then I hear the shuffle of his feet as he follows me. The gym doors are open when I arrive there, and I quickly join the team, who are gathered in front of the stage.
"You're late," Brax comments.
Coach jumps off the stage to join us, "Shush up so I can make the announcement." Everyone falls quiet as we wait for him to share, "We have a tournament in Boston this weekend!" Everyone cheers. "Zack has paid for our team to have six rooms, four of you to a room. And Zack also told me he was considering coming with us to watch you all win!"
"There are eighteen of us, so that would still leave a room for you, right?" Coach Wilhelm nods at Duke's calculations.
"But where would Zack stay?" Brax asks.
Coach doesn't wait for a response "Probably with me." He shrugs.
Sebastian speaks up, "I don't want to share a room with Duke, Augustus, Louis, or Folium."
"What's wrong with Folium?" Dion asks. "He hasn't done anything to you."
"Have you not seen the way he dresses?"
"I've slept over at his house before, you think I haven't seen how my best friend dresses?" Dion defends me.
Sebastian sighs, "No, what I mean is he dresses very gay. I don't want to sleep in the same room with someone who's gay, as I am not."
Coach Wilhelm all of a sudden looks angry at Sebastian. "You have no idea if Folium is gay or not, and frankly it's not any of your business."
I laugh and shrug, "It's fine. I don't care. Actually, I take that as a compliment. Gay men typically dress well."
It's almost as if Coach doesn't hear me. "You can hardly tell anything about someone by how they look.''
"Yes, you can," Sebastian argues back.
Coach Wilhelm stays quiet for a moment then asks, "Fine, if you think so, what do you think I am?"
"Straight as hell and very likely cis" Coach reaches up onto the stage, grabs the duffel bag that has his stuff in it, and sets it down on the floor in front of him.
"What's that?" Oliver asks.
Coach replies flatly, "My bag," and starts to dig through it.
Michael proceeds to ask, "What are you looking for?" He seems to find the item as he pulls out something that looks like it's made of dark colored denim and tosses it to Sebastian.
Sebastian raises an eyebrow as he catches it. Looking at it, he asks, "What the hell is this? " Coach zips his bag back up and sets it back on the stage where it had previously been.
"Just look at it." Sebastian unfolds the article of clothing and
we all realize that it's a skirt. It's dark colored, but the pockets are
