'Are we sure we want to do this? Once we do, there is no going back.'
I smirk even though I know Dylan won't see it before whispering, "Or they'll think we're more crazy. At least Sarah believes us."
'Lucinda and Lucifer will believe us. I just know it.'
"It's not very nice to call them by their first names. You know that." A knock on the door makes me jump before I call, "Come in!"
Sarah enters with a comically large smile, "Who ya talking to?"
I smile at her as she twirls around my room, "Dylan. We are thinking about showing Mom and Dad the switch. What- er- How do you think they're gonna react?"
'It'll be fine, Sammy.'
"I dunno. They haven't believed you before, but if you show them the switch, I think they will," Sarah replies, "But they love you regardless."
'Yeah, right. They love you regardless. After this, we'll see how they feel about me.'
I nod as I take a deep breath. Dylan keeps whispering assurances in my head to keep me relaxed. "Mom! Dad!" I call to them as I enter the living room.
"Yes, hun?" Dad answers from the couch, using hun instead of a name to avoid offending one of us.
"We want to talk to you... Dylan and I..."
My mom smiles sweetly, "And how would that work?" What? Oh, right. That's how DID works, isn't it?
'Yup,' Dylan responds shortly.
"Have we ever shown you the switch?" I ask quietly.
They shake their heads before Dad asks, "What's that?"
I sit down on the couch as they watch me intently. "The switch is... well, it's hard to explain. When Dylan takes over, he can make himself look different, like himself, or stay looking like me. We call it the switch when he looks different. And since you don't believe us, we want to show you evident proof that it's not DID."
"If it's not DID, what is it?" Mom asks with a raised eyebrow.
I shrug, "I have no idea, but I have a feeling it would fall under the same term that Aqualana's abilities fall under."
Dad clears his throat, "So that would be magik?"
"I suppose." I take a deep breath before pushing my consciousness back and letting Dylan take control. His eyes turning green, his hair brown from root to end. His posture is undeniably better than mine, shoulders held higher than mine do. Back straighter, well, he definitely isn't the straighter one of us.
A gasp echoes through the room as I relinquish my hold on the body. Our parents have never seen the switch before, and it hits me how odd it must look to someone else. Dylan slips forward and takes control before muttering a shy, "Hi."
Dylan...Donivan
"Hi," I mutter quietly, not knowing how they'll react.
Both Lucinda and Lucifer's jaws drop before Samuel's mom says unbelievingly, "What the hell? Since when could you do this?"
Right as she finishes speaking, Lucifer falls off the couch, "Ow..." He groans out. His wife starts fawning over him and his well-being while I sit there quietly, refusing to give a crap for a parent that thought I was part of some disorder. I used to care, but not after they completely dismissed my existence for craziness. That feels worse than if they had beaten Samuel and I. We got lucky in that department, they were lovely parents to Sammy, but when it came to me... Not so much as a glance and a muttering of, "Here he goes again." Sammy loves them, so I put up with it. Only for him. And I guess for Sarah too. She's known all along that we weren't crazy and never questioned us. Never has, never will. It may just be the fact that she's too young to understand and it maybe her usually trusting in people, but her belief is belief regardless. And it was her love, too, that kept me around.
