"-us... Mr. Klaus!" Surprised by Minori's sudden call, I released the bottle that I was heating. Luckily, no one got hurt.
"Minori, it's alright to visit every now and then but do be mindful when you see me working. You might get hurt in the process."
"Oh, I'm really sorry for that. It's just..." Her voice trails off and she doesn't look me in the eye.
"'Just'?" I cock my head. Why'd she stop?
"Umm... I started to smell something burning so I went inside to check." She doesn't look at me and points at the bottle that I was heating just a few moments ago.
My eyes focus on the bottle and I see that the chamomile that I was melting had turned into a substance containing similar properties as that of charcoal.
Well, this is surely embarrassing. "Oh, I do apologize for letting you see such a humiliating scene." I drown the contents in water and let it drain in the sink.
I set the bottle down on the sink and wipe my hands with a dry towel I grabbed from the side.
Minori stood quietly beside me and smiled. "It's weird of you to lose focus while working, Mr. Klaus. But I guess even the most calm people also have things that occupy their mind. If you don't mind, you can always talk to me if you have any problems."
"Oh, it's nothing. It's just that I might be in love with you." Of course I can't say something as vulgar as that.
"I thank you for your concern, Minori. I'm just a little under the weather is all." I rub the back of my neck, hoping that my face doesn't show any obvious signs of what I'm really thinking as of now.
"Oh, is that so? Okay, I guess. I hope that you get better soon." she just eagerly smiles at me and the both of us just stand in front of each other at the front of the sink.
Uncomfortable of the current situation, I try to hold a different conversation. "Then may I ask what brings you here?"
"You know." she shrugs. "I just wanted to see you."
My heart is travelling to my neck and the way it beats too fast makes me unable to speak.
"Whyever would you be happy just to see an old fool like me?" I say.
When did I start wanting to expect her to come to my home regardless if I'm working or not?
"That sort of thing is something that you should only tell the one that you truly love." I spit out my lie.
"Eh? I don't understand. Why?" Minori raises an eyebrow.
I'm not sure whether she's pretending not to understand or her mind is purer than I thought it'd be.
"Hmm? Why, you ask. Here, allow me to give you an example." I wonder if I'm going to give her this example for her safety or for my own convenience.
My feelings still haven't reached a mark.
"Phrases like those can give some men... ideas. If you blithely say such things to every man you meet..." I take a step forward towards Minori and whisper in her ear. "Then someday you may be caught by a big, bad wolf and gobbled up. So have a care who you say that to."
Minori didn't flinch nor move. Have I made a mistake in doing such a bold action?
I may have gone too far...
"I'm sorry, Mr. Klaus but I didn't understand. Could you umm... rephrase that?" She stares at me with her pure and beady emerald green orbs.
Or... maybe not.
