The sweet kiss of morning
Made me rub my reddish nose
And sniffle
With my eyes half-open—
Blanketed with sleep—
As you held my hand.I looked up at you,
and you glanced down and grinned
At my crooked bangs
As your warm hands let go of me
And I was left to watch as you waved goodbye.I remembered something just like it:
Sand was smeared across my face
And in my eyes
As I cried for you
And felt raw fear for the first time.I don't remember the rest,
But I do know that somehow
You found me in a mess
On that sandy beach
With tears dripping down my chin,And you held my hand
As I tripped down the shore
To catch up to you.I was always following you,
Waiting for you to hold my hand
And guide me away from
That sandy beach,
But somehow,
I think that maybe—Maybe I never left.
I still feel the sand
And that beach
Hold my hands
And kiss my forehead,
Gently— as if it never showed me
What fear truly was.
