Mr. Steel clinks his champagne glass and says, "Ladies and gentlemen, I have an announcement to make." He touches my back and adds, "Sophie Kingsley will be marrying my son, Killian."

When Killian enters, my heart sinks as I realize he is the man I nearly kissed earlier. Killian runs down the stairs, buttoning his shirt, his hair disheveled, his face obscured by a masquerade mask. He seems equally shocked upon seeing me but quickly masks his surprise with a smirk. The room suddenly feels like it's spinning, and a wave of darkness engulfs me.

Killians POV

My father's voice cuts through the din of the party. "Killian, we need to talk." I follow him into a quieter corner, my mind already bracing for the lecture.

He doesn't waste time. "You're to marry Sophie Kingsley," he says, his tone brooking no argument. "Her family is well-connected, and this union will strengthen our position. I don't want to hear any objections."

I try to hide my frustration. "But I've heard she's extremely sheltered—never goes out, doesn't drink. She's ten years younger than me and has no idea about our business. It's not a marriage I want."

My father's gaze hardens. "I understand your concerns, but this is not up for debate. You will marry Sophie."

I mention Stacey, someone I believe would be easier to handle. "I'd prefer to marry Stacey. She's more my type and understands the world."

My father's face tightens with irritation. "Stacey is not an option. This marriage to Sophie is crucial for our family's future. You'll do your duty."

I swallow my disappointment. My father's word is law, and despite my own desires, I'll have to go through with this. Sophie Kingsley it is.

As I scan the room, I spot my ex-best friend, Ralph, dancing with an intriguing girl. My irritation flares at the sight of him so close to her. Knowing that Ralph might be a potential threat, I push through the crowd, my frustration boiling over.

When I reach them, Ralph stiffens, clearly intimidated by my presence. I take the girl's hand and pull her into a dance, redirecting my focus to the situation at hand. Her hand rests on my chest, and I can feel the rhythm of her heartbeat syncing with the music. She's stunning, with hazel eyes and straight, glossy hair that falls just above her ass. Her tight gold dress accentuates her glowing skin, making her look even more captivating.

As we dance, I'm struck by her innocence and beauty, making me wish I could be with her instead. However, I can't ignore the reality of our world and how she seems too pure to be involved in it. I long to see more of her face and to peek behind her mask, but I know it's not possible right now.

I pull back and say, "Excuse me, I shouldn't be dancing with you." My tone is firm yet apologetic. "I'm engaged."

Without another word, I storm off, deciding to go upstairs to see Stacey. I need to clear my mind and let off some steam. She can help me unwind and get my focus back on track.

I walk upstairs, heading toward my floor. Although this is my house, that particular floor is off-limits. I prefer my own floor cool and dark. As I ascend, I hear soft sobs and see a petite girl shivering. I'm about to shout at her when I notice the shine of her dress and her sleek, long hair. Realizing it's the same girl I danced with, I see her face clearly now. She bumps into me and looks up, her eyes filled with tears. I wipe away her tears and rub her arms to keep her warm. Normally, I'm not affectionate with women; I usually end things violently once I'm done with them. I don't know why, but I feel bad for her.
