My mother unlocked the door, and our maid Charlotte walked in cheerfully. "Sophie, you're getting married!" she twirled me around. "You'll finally be free." I forced a smile and laughed, brushing my hair behind my ear. "Get downstairs and change; you can't wear yesterday's clothes. Rose won't be happy about that, and your breakfast is ready."
Charlotte closed the door, and I headed downstairs to find a plate with a single grape in front of me. Confused, I looked up. "Baby, I don't want you getting fat for your wedding today. You need to look slim—no bloated belly," my mother said, rolling her eyes. She kissed my cheek and handed me a glass of milk, still feeling hungry.
Father came in and said, "Sophie, I want you on your best behavior. Make sure you obey him. When he wants you, you must comply without question."
I coughed, "Excuse me?"
"You heard what I said, dear," he replied.
My mother then added, "Father is right. Now get upstairs and change. Emily and her team are waiting for you."
I looked at them both and said, "What if I don't want to marry him?"
My parents' faces hardened with anger. "It's not just about you, Sophie," my mother snapped. "This marriage will benefit the family business."
"Family business?" I echoed, my voice trembling with frustration. "What business are you even talking about? I don't know anything about it!"
Ignoring their stares, I stormed upstairs, my heart pounding with a mix of fear and defiance.
When I reached the top of the stairs, Emily was waiting for me, her expression as brisk as ever. Without a word, she grabbed my arm and pulled me into the room, where a clipboard with a detailed list awaited.
"Let's go through this," she said, her tone brisk and matter-of-fact.
The list was extensive. "First," Emily began, "your fiancé has specified a full-body waxing to ensure you're perfectly smooth. After that, you'll have a manicure and pedicure. He's also chosen the exact wedding dress you'll wear—a fitted, stunning gown with a beautiful veil. It's important that everything looks flawless."
Emily continued, "When you shower, use the strawberry-scented body wash and the candy rose body lotion he specified. For your hair, use the strawberry shampoo and conditioner. And for perfume, he wants you to wear the candy rose blend."
She glanced at the list and added, "He doesn't want you to wear any necklace, but there is a Swarovski diamond bracelet with his name engraved on it that you must wear. Additionally, you're not to remove your veil during the wedding ceremony."
Emily's gaze hardened slightly as she added, "And he insists that you stay silent throughout the ceremony. No one is to hear your voice unless he gives you permission to speak."
As she read through the list, each detail felt like a tightening noose around my freedom. Emily's tone didn't waver, and she didn't seem to notice the growing tension in the room.
"Everything has to be perfect," she added, her gaze unwavering. "Now, we don't have time to waste. Let's get started."
