Second Chance

Chapter 1

“You’re kidding, right?” Alexis asked.
“No. I’m being serious” her mom replied.
“You’re selfish” Alex spat and his mom flinched.
“Alex” she called warningly.

“What? You’ve been dating him for a while and you didn’t bother to tell us. Now, that he proposed, you suddenly remember that you have children, right?” Alex said and walked away.

His mom stared at him with tears in the corner of her eyes.
“He’s right mom. We don’t deserve this” Alexis said and went after her brother.

Alice, the twins’ mom was confused on how to approach the situation. She just sat down and buried her face in her palm.

“What the hell, dad?” Ryder yelled.
“Language Ry” his dad warned, Ryder scoffed.
“You never really cared about us anyway” Ryder said and walked out grabbing the key to his motorbike on his way. Richard stared at his other son Ryan.

“Ryan” he called.
“How is it that we didn’t know you were in a relationship but we get to know that you’re getting married? You didn’t carry us along and now you didn’t even ask us if we want someone else in the family.” Ryan said.

“I’m sorry” Richard apologized.
“Do I get sisters?” Ryan asked. Richard chuckled and ruffled Ryan’s hair.
“Stop it. I’m not a kid anymore” he said pushing his dad’s hand away from his head.
“Yes. You’ll have a sister” Richard replied and Ryan smiled.
“Fine by me then” Ryan said.
“You don’t care if I’m happy or not?” Richard asked. Ryan shrugged and walked away.

Richard went to his room and placed a call through to Alice.
“How did it go?”
“Very bad. They’re upset I didn’t tell them all the time we were dating.” Alice said her voice shaking
“Alice, calm down”
“I didn’t know how to tell them and I kept on postponing it” she said in tears.
“Sweetheart, you need to calm down and stop crying”
“I’m really confused on what to do”
“Let’s see tomorrow to talk better”
“Alright. How did it go with the boys?”
“Well, Ryder ran off saying I don’t care about them. Ryan is cool with it because he’s getting a sister.”
Alice chuckled. “I hope it works out”
“Don’t worry, it will. I promise.”

At night, Richard knocked on Ryder’s door and there was no response the first time but a soft reply came when he knocked the second time. Richard went in and closed the door gently.

Ryder was on his bed with his headphone on and he was scrolling through his phone. Richard sighed as he sat down on his bed staring at him and gathering his thoughts. Ryder looked at his father and removed the headphones.

“I’m sorry” Richard apologized.
“I’m sorry for neglecting you and your brother. I just had a hard time dealing with your mother’s death and stayed away from you guys. Then I met Alice and I recovered myself. I tried to build our broken relationship but you hated me and everything I did. Ryan loves you so much he does everything you do. Alice makes me happy Ry” Richard said.

“Why didn’t you ever say anything?” Ryder asked.
“Because I feared what your reaction will be. I didn’t want you to look at me in a different way but I already failed.” Richard replied.
“I want to be more involved with you and Ryan. I promise to be there always henceforth” Richard said.

Ryder looked at his father but said nothing and with no intention of speaking. Richard realizing this stood up. He kissed Ryder’s forehead and walked out of his room.

Alice couldn’t find any of the twins in their room but she wasn’t worried. They lived in a bungalow with an attic. The attic was the twins’ hideout.

It had a TV, couches, beds, shelves filled with books and a bathroom. Alex sat on one of the couches, his knees to his chest. Alexis sat beside him assuming the same position.

“Am I selfish to not want another family member? I don’t want a father; neither do I want any other sibling apart from you” Alex said.

“Think about it this way, this man makes mom happy and we want mom to be happy” Alexis said. Alex sighed.
“Let’s judge after meeting him” Alexis said and hugged her brother.
