"Emma, have you seen my cat Muning?" I asked Emma while searching for my cat Muning.
"Ummmm... he escaped earlier..."
"What? Why did you let him escape?" My voice was trembling as I began to tear up.
"Do you know that Muning is all I have left?"
Emma looked down, unable to meet my eyes.
"Kuya, I didn't mean to... I fed him and then..."
But I could no longer hear her explanations. It felt like all the memories were coming back— the day Mama and Papa had an accident because they were rushing to pick up Emma from preschool.
The nights I spent alone at home, with no one to hold but Muning.
I looked out the window.
It was getting dark.
Rain was threatening.
I can see the guilt on her face.
But in that moment, I couldn't feel pity for her.
I could only feel pain and loss.
"Kuya, I'm really sorry," Emma whispered, her voice also trembling.
"I'll find him, I promise. Even if it takes all night."
"It's already night, it's dangerous outside."
But Emma didn't give up.
"No, Kuya. This is my fault. I'll find Muning."
"It's late," I said, holding back my irritation. "You should have looked for him earlier when he first went missing. Now you're only thinking of looking for Muning?"
"But Kuya..." she whispered. "I didn't know you'd get this angry." She said while looking for the flashlight.
"Three." I sighed, trying to control the frustration in my voice.
"I said it's night, it's dangerous outside."
She was looking down, her hands trembling as she gripped her clothes tightly.Suddenly, Emma looked up at me.
It seemed she had a good idea.
She approached me.
"Kuya, if I can't search for him, I'll just take Muning's place," she said, her voice filled with a mix of bravery and hope.
I was taken aback by what she said. "What do you mean?"
"Look!"
She suddenly knelt on the floor and looked up at me.
"Meow meow," she said, imitating Muning.
"What are you doing?" I asked, somewhat amused by her antics.
But she didn't stop.
She came closer to me and rubbed her head against my leg, just like Muning does when he wants to be affectionate.
"Meow, I'm Muning!"
"Why is Muning like that?"
"Why not?" Emma asked, her eyes shining with determination. "Look, I can crawl!"
I could only giggle and look at her. "I mean, why is Muning wearing clothes?" I asked her.
