She stared at her for the longest moment, desperately hoping to feel that connection, but she found that she didn't feel anything. Throughout her pregnancy, she didn't feel anything, and she couldn't understand why. Mothers are supposed to feel something, right?
But she wasn't a mother, not to this baby girl, and not to any other child.
Violet spent approximately five hours with her daughter before she snuck out of the hospital, leaving that baby girl without a mother. The baby cried and screamed, but Violet was long gone. She left the baby, talked to her parents, and walked away, leaving her town and life behind in that hospital.
She wasn't ready to be a mother. She knew it all along, but she couldn't get rid of the baby, not when her parents pushed her to have the baby. She considered adoption, but that overwhelmed her, so instead of coming up with a subtle plan, she abandoned the baby, knowing that they'd figure out a way to find the baby's father.
She could've called the father, but they hadn't spoken in months. Besides, their relationship was far from perfect, and neither of them were right for each other. Calling him didn't make sense, not when he told her to lose his number.
She was a rich girl who came from a respectable, upstanding family, and he was just a boy from a small town. Violet and Luke met in December of 1983 when Luke's dad's truck broke down in Hartford due to the cold weather, and Violet's dad offered to fix it up for nothing. Luke asked for Violet's number, and she thought he was cute, so they exchanged phone numbers, and he called her. From there, their relationship consisted of late night phone calls and meaningless hookups. There was no love involved in their relationship. They were young, and they just wanted to have some casual fun.
At eighteen-years-old, Violet never wanted anything serious as she was going to college, and Luke── nineteen at the time── seemed like an answer to the question of fun.
However, four months later, their relationship── if it can even be called that── ended with a messy argument and an unwanted pregnancy.
