The first thing Toby did when the group arrived back to the chateau was crack open a beer. She wasn't the biggest drinker — much preferring to smoke instead — but after a day of running for her life, chicken murder and grave robbery, getting wasted felt like the only thing that might make her forget the madness.
Now, four beers in, she was waiting for the sandwich JJ promised to make for the two of them. She lent back in her seat, enjoying the slight buzz as she watched John B, who was sat opposite her staring at the white envelope he claimed was from his dad like it might explode.
At first, Toby was happy to watch him try and burn a hole through the envelope with his gaze, but after ten minutes of him just sitting there, not making a move to open it, boredom settled in.
"Oh sure, take your time John B. It's not like there's people out there willing to kill us to get their hands on that thing or anything." Toby huffed, rolling her eyes.
Three pairs of identical glares turned her way. She shrank back in her seat with a little pout.
"JJ." Kiara called to the kitchen, her voice cutting through the tension. The blonde appeared a moment later, two sandwiches in hand.
"Yup, yup. Hot damn. Let's do it." He grinned, stopping behind Toby's chair and passing her one of the sandwiches with a dramatic bow. "M'Lady."
A grin tugged up at Toby's lips as she took the sandwich, playing along. "Why thank you, M'Lord."
But just as she was about to take a bite, JJ gagged loudly from behind her and slapped the sandwich clean out of her hand.
"Don't eat that, T, it's poison!"
Toby rolled her eyes, completely unfazed by his theatrics, and let him throw away the sandwich while she turned her attention back to John B, who was finally opening the envelope.
Inside, John B pulled out a folded piece of paper — a map. Toby squinted, trying to make sense of it from her upside down perspective. She realised, after a moment, that it was a map of the island, littered with drawings and notes. But one thing stood out, a thick, black X.
Pope tapped it, his voice serious. "X marks the spot."
"Longitude, latitude." John B added. "Wait, there's something else in there." He reached back into the envelope and pulled out a small black devise.
"What's that?" Toby asked.
"It's a tape recorder. Dumbass." Kiara snarked.
Toby's lips thinned in annoyance, and she took a long, slow swig of her beer. "Thanks, bitch." She muttered under her breath, just loud enough for Kiara to hear.
JJ, always quick to back her up, patted her on the shoulder and shot Kiara a pointed look Toby was unable to see from her seated position.
Ignoring the girls, John B pressed a button on the tape recorder. The tape crackled to life, and Big John's voice filled the room.
