Chapter 5
It is early morning and exciting things are happening in the cave in Åby. The dragon queen's egg is about to hatch. She has never experienced anything like this before and she is curious about the little ones that will soon emerge from the white large eggs that she laid the previous day. The male is still sleeping. The Dragon Queen wonders if she should wake him but she lets him sleep.
The bottom five eggs in the first nest begin to move. First, small cracks form in the shell and a transparent liquid begins to flow out. The liquid smells good. Both the good smell and the fact that the liquid is transparent tell the dragon queen directly that nothing has gone wrong with the hatchlings. Sometimes the liquid bubbles up when the baby dragons move.
The moving eggs were the first five laid by the female. After a while the cracks get bigger and the whole pile of eggs vibrates from the movements underneath. It makes an interesting sound when the hard shells move against each other. The dragon queen can hear tiny beeps from some of the eggs. The frequency is so high that a human cannot hear it but the dragon queen hears the beep.
Soon there is a loud crackling sound as the shell opens more and more. Small claws protrude from a crack and they drag across the white shell, breaking the shell piece by piece. A long tail protrudes from an egg. The tail wags a few times but is mostly still. Some of the baby dragons grunt loudly while others beep. Some of the eggs swing against the others and form new cracks both on the egg that is swinging and on those that have not begun to crack.
The dragon queen watches intently as the bottom eggs continue to hatch and soon five baby dragons crawl out of the pile of eggs. They have bad balance and sometimes they fall over, but they quickly get back on all fours. Some of the baby dragons bump into each other but none of them get hurt. A baby dragon spreads its wings and flaps them. A little of the translucent liquid that were in the egg it hatched from, splashes from the wings and hits some other newly hatched. The young dragons that get the liquid on them squirm a little to get the wet liquid off.
The baby dragons look up at their mother. They seem a little scared at first, but when the dragon queen comes closer and hums lovingly, they understand that they don't need to be afraid. All the baby dragons have very big and cute eyes. The dragon queen thinks they are very cute.
The five baby dragons have completely different colors than their parents. The hatched dragon cubs have the following colors: Beige, light yellow, yellow orange, black orange and silver. The baby dragons clumsily climb out of the nest and begin to investigate the cave. They don't go very far but stay close to the nest they came from. The dragon queen gives them food when all the eggs have hatched. It gets easier that way.
It takes a minute or two but soon cracks form in 10 other eggs which are also quite far down. All the shells crackle as all ten baby dragons struggle to get out. The cracks get bigger every time the baby dragons press hard against the shell. Some of the ten baby dragons squeak while others grunt softly.
One of the eggs cracks with a loud noise. The baby dragon has cracked the shell with the help of its wings and they are fully raised. It looks funny when the wings stick out from the egg. A few seconds later, the baby dragon tumbles out of the nest. It still has its wings outstretched. From another egg, a baby dragon's left foreleg and hind leg protrude from two large cracks. When the baby dragon moves its legs violently, the cracks soon get bigger and the baby dragon is freed from its shell. It soon tumbles out of the nest and looks around confused. What is this new place?
Another egg jumps around in the nest and it hits several others that haven't started to crack yet. Cracks mostly form on the top and bottom of the jumping egg. After a few seconds, the top has come off and the baby dragon uses its front legs to get out of the egg.
