Eyes

He made us two legs,
four for cattle, dogs, and cats,
thousands for worms,
even none for fish.
He made us as many as we need.

No wonder god made all our eyes,
one pair each.
He made two for me,
two for you,
and two each for every being.
He made us as many as we need.

He made us a simple skinny coat,
a designer one for zebras,
scaly for fish,
and jet black for the crow.
He made us each whatever we need.

No wonder god made all our eyes,
a doorway to the soul,
for grief to leave in warm droplets,
for joy to gleam in warmer peaks,
for us to speak when words fail to.
No wonder he made us each whatever we need.

No wonder he made all our eyes
the very same.
